Is the power from a 3" catback worth the noise?

Hi,

I was wondering if the gains from a 3" catback was worth it, because i live in a area where cops would dick you for anything especially annoying loud exhausts.

so lets say open air filter + ice box, 2.75" DP, 3" TP, Stock Exhaust + Reflash @22psi on an evo 9.

vs.

everything else the same with a 3" Catback, are there huge gains to be found with the exhaust and if so by how much?

also quick question...why the hell do srt4's sound so damn raw (popping/cracking)?

thanks

aftermarket exhaust is typically louder than stock, w/o the cat it'll be louder as well.

not all after market exhaust are loud but most are. you can have a freeflowing 3 inche exhaust with no cat and a straight through muffler and still be quite

the key the size of the muffler. most aftermarket exhaust for the evo use a round 6-7 inch diamater muffler witha 14 inch body. these mufflers are always going to be loud simply because they are too small. too many people think the evo is just loud cuz of the turbo. simmply not true. ppl just need to stop useing the small round 6-7 inch diamater muffler witha 14 inch body.
you need an magnaflow 5x11 OVAL muffler with a 22inch body. the evos need the one with a center and offset outlet.

thats the muffler. i have that muffler on my 500whp integra with a full 3" piping no cat, no resonators, and the exhaust is almost silent. you hear the motor louder than the exhaust when in the car you cannot even hear the exhaust at all.

here it is for muffler on the evo

but thats a outragious price . you can have this cat back made at a good muffler shop for about $300 total with muffler. you can buy the muffler for under a hundred. spend $30 on a nice tip and about $100 on a bunch of 3 inch u bends and have a muffler shop make the exhaust.

thats what i did for my integra and i will also do the same for my evo soon.

Well a true three inch exhaust will make more power not for sure over a 2.75 on a bone stock car but as you start to harness power from the ECU and you bolt ons list gets greater then size becomes a issue, turbo and high horsepower dont really like back pressure however with a proper silencer you can reduce the noise level to a minimum

A fujitsubo along with a resonator will be really quiet, almost stock like I would say. The runner up would be the tanabe touring medallion

Not for me personally. That's why I run the setup I have, with the stock cat. Extremely quiet, but I did not get much gain on the dyno. But I just can't go running around cat-less with my job. People with similar setups to mine, on the same dyno with 3"TBE have made about 6-10hp more than me. I am more than willing to sacrifice that power to be a bit more quiet.....for now.

is it worth it to upgrade to a 2.75" dp and 3" TP +tune if i was going to leave my exhaust stock?

I don't understand the question.

A tbe + tune is very much worth the money though.

i have a full 3 inch exhaust...perrin downpipe, ultimate racing high flow cat and invidia G200 catback... Inside the cabin i cannot really tell a difference from stock. From the outside when you wot you can definitelly hear the aftermarket sound, without been obnoxious or very loud...

you can have a very nice setup and get the gains of a larger exhaust without getting the noise...

I would suggest not to change the dp and cat only as it will bottleneck to the stock exhaust badly... Simply choose one of the following if you don't want the noise:

- Invidia G200
- Greddy Evo2
- Tanabe medalion touring
- Injen SES
- Fujitsubo RMA-01

all the above exhausts are at least 3 inch (except the Fuji which tapers down in the resonators) all of them have at least one resonator...

I just bought a GReddy Evo 2 catback from a member here. Its not too loud and I noticed a slight decrease in spool up time. The GReddy is, hands down, the best fitting exhaust I have installed.
