VIN/Production numbers.
So I have heard that less than 7000 Evos are being made. Who really knows for sure, afterall it is all about
making money.
Anyways, my question is: My last 4 digits of my VIN are higher than 7000. How can we tell exactly what production number our Evo is?

This is easy to figure out. It's a serial number and it has to be numbered just for the Evo. So say you have # 087440
It seems the 087 is static for this model, in theory you'd have number 440. Unless there was a 086 number, then it'd be 1440.
You need someone who has brought on of the first and someone who just got thiers to figure it out.

even then, that might not work too well. i don't know VINs very well, or even own an evo, for that matter, but someone who just got theres might have bought one that was sitting on a lot for a while. and depending on area, they could have been sitting there since initial shipments. i think an insider is a better idea, but maybe one of the dealers on the site would know?
Well I do know VINs cause if you ever worked in a dealer that is how parts are identified. Every character has a meaning and the last six digits are the serial number. There is no magic here, VINs have been this way for a loooong time. I reconstructed a VIN once with only part of the information so it could re run to prove a stolen car. Happened to be mine, but that's a different story.
We all have a build date on the driver's B pillar, Mine says January 2003 which would be somewhat early. Remeber they have to build and ship them and they probably built up some inventory before the offcial release.

I heard somewhere that all Lancer models have the same VIN series as they're manufactured. During manufacture, some chassis here and there were pulled to begin the process of strengthening the unibody especially for EVO production. In other words, there may not be any way to get the sequence unless MMC has a master list that they would share with us (since the selection of Lancers may have just been random as they needed them). Offical release of the production numbers may be publicly available at the end of the model year.

Well, if the production number is the last six digits, than there are ALOT more Evos produced than any of us think..... My last five digits are around 96000 if I remember correctly.

I was told that the Evos were numbered in sequence with all other cars that are in production at the assembly plant in Japan.
The only difference being that the Evo's have a different model designation code at digits 5 and 6 of the VIN.. It's 'H8' for the US Evo's.
So, in essence, the last six numbers identify how many cars of the Lancer bodystyle were produced in that model year, from that assembly plant.
But individual cars within that scheme can be of different model designations...An evo could be car # 055000, and a Lancer OZ could be #005501. The only difference would be the model designation code in the first few letters of the VIN's digit code.
There is no way of telling what # Evo you have by the VIN...unless someone in Japan had access to the assembly records and looked it up for ya.
