transmission blues

I just autox this past weekend. On my way back from the track, I decided to "stretch the legs" of my 5sp 2005 evo, and, hypothetically, go to about 140.
I slowed down to traffic in from of my, and then down shifted at about 55 to 4th to overtake a stupid minivan.
5th went in somehow reluctantly (not much) and it refused to come out. I clutched down and come to a stop.
The shifter felt "stuck" in 5th and I managed to take it out of gear with a little force.
I felt as if the cables were stuck. The entire shifter felt obstructed by something, but after a few giggles 1,2,3,4 would go in and out of gear. no 5th or reverse.
I checked the cables and there is nothing wrong with it.
I disconnected them one at time and they move freely. The 2 metal plates on the transmission top are feeling very notchy.
anyone had this problem?
Any ideas how what it might be?
Mechanics in Minneapolis that could fix this problem?

Thanks

William

Sounds like your clutch is done. Try not stretching your Evo's legs on public roads, save that for the race track or you will be arrested, and your Evo will be impounded.

Thank you captain obvious....

Yeah sounds like your clutch I had the same thing happen to me in my old Tsi. I was able to fix it with a simple pedal adjustment because I knew that clutch was not gone. WhenI replaced the clutch soon after I realized that it had more life than I thought. I think you might need more of an expert opinion but it really depends if the clutch it slipping more than anything.

With the car runnig it can go into the first 4 gears fine?
If that is the case will it drive fine down the road using those gears?
If you answered yes its likely not the clutch. Could be as simple as a shifter bushing or you may have lost those gears and off to Shep or TRE it goes.
