3 inch straight exhaust

i was told by someone that a straight exhaust on any car burns up the engine faster. especially a 3 inch exhaust on a small 4 cylinder. is this true.

Not directly/literally. It does increase hp and tq. so that does mean faster engine wear (just a hair!) if you think about it. I trust our mighty 4g63 will last awhile if you maintain it properly. That means if you abuse it more than average than change out the fluids more often. The block will handle 450-500 whp reliably as long as you take precautions you'll be fine.

this might be true on a N/A car. You don't have the backpressure to help scavenge the air out of the engine.
But on a forced induction car, no problem!

That's what I was thinking. We don't need no stinking back pressure!

Idiotic. A car making north of 300whp will not be harmed by a 3" exhaust. If you have some anemic little 140hp 1.8L, it's a bit different.

If that were true then a dump/cut-out exhaust on any turbo car would NOT show the best gains at the track. And thats right after the turbo. You may lose some low end torque around town but overall gains would be significant

OK....heres the rule of thumb, which applies to ALL cars NA or Boost : What ever you exhaust is stock, to get the max performance go up 1/4 - 1/2 inch. Our exhaust is metric but is like 1 or 2 mm shy of 2.5 inches. SOOO.....you go to 3 inch.....unless your making 700whp+ then I might concider going to a 3.5 - 4 inch down pipe and then tapering to a 3-3.5.

Bottom line, that guy dosen't own an evo, so he dosent know enough about them. If you need info about your car EVOLUTIONM.NET is the place to SEARCH it for it.....you will find it. If you cant, post a thread, but make sure you search first.
