I just removed the factory gauges (boost, oil temp, volt), and I've figured out what all of the wires are except for the oil temp sender. There is a black wire with a white line, and a white wire. I'm asking because I'm trying to install autometer ultralites, and the oil temp gauge that I have has only one sender connection, along with a ground and ignition. Can anyone tell me what these wires are, and if anyone knows if and how to connect to my new gauge. Thanks in advance.

 

Do you have a voltmeter? Just check and see what sends what voltage (12V) and when (Ignition on, low pressure, high pressure). It's kind of confusing, but once you see how to do it, you'll be much better off in the future with the electrical components of the vehicle.

 

Ground is black, igntion will be the power one and the other one goes to the sender itself.

Ignition wire goes to anything that has on off power. Like your stereo, dome light ignition (which from what I heard is in the steering column and a thick white wire) I have mine to my stereo power wire so when I shut my stereo off the gauges shut off.

 

I know what the wires are on the gauges, and I reused the connections that were already on the car for ignition and ground. The problem is that the new gauge has one wire for the sender, whereas the factory installed gauge and oil temp sender has two wires (black w/ white stripe, and solid white). I’m trying to figure out whether the factory temp sender is compatible, and if so, what necessary connections i have to make to ensure it works properly.

you will need to find voltage range of the stockgauges vs. what autometer needs.. most likely not compatible..

 

Not true completely. I used the stock wiring/stock oil temp sender on a Stewart Warner oil temp gauge and it reads accurate (I checked the conversions).

 

as i said, most likely.. not deff. though.

 

For all that asked I will document what wires go to what for the install.

 

White with stripe- signal
white- grounded to chassis
black- ground: light
yellow- 12V: light
red- 12V igntion

This is for a Stewart Warner oil temp gauge install with the stock oil temp wiring.

 

So after grounding the white wire, and using the black w/white stripe for signal I finally got the gauge to give me a reading. I took it around the town for about 4 or so miles, mind you my car had already been warm from driving home from work. The gauge wouldn't come past 100f. So I'll leave it installed for a while and see what i find out.

What is the temp outside? Recently it has been in the 30s-40s and the temp never goes past 140.

 

Yeah its been in the 20s here, but I would think the oil temp would break 100. But thats why I've decided to leave it for a while and see if we get an unusually warm day.

 

Well according to the conversion.....50 C is 122 F. On cold days my stock temp gauge wouldn't hit 50 sometimes.
