Whine from engine compartment

We have only 44,000 miles on a RS. We have replaced only the tires, brakes, and clutch in that time. The car has always been loud but recently there is a low then to high whine when on the freeway. I suspect it is the tranny although I had the oil level checked yesterday and it is fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It could possibly be the T-Case death whine which is weird since the RS doesnt have an open diff. Does the whine get louder with speed?

You'll have to be more specific, can you provide more details? Ex: clutch in or out? at what speed does the whine begin? Have you changed the driveline fluids yet?

TeStUdO,

Yes the noise increases with speed. It just started happening one day.

TxEvolt,

The clutch is in when driving freeway speeds. The starting time varies. It seems to also occur less loudly at low speeds. But if I load it up (going up a hill), I hear it; just not as loud.

Strange.

Can you pin point it to maybe a wheel or side? Could be a wheel bearing. I have also seen the input shaft bearings go which is more rare but a similar noise to what you are speaking about.

Joe's EVOB,

The sound seems to be coming from the passenger side. There is no noticable sound when going less than 10 mph. Over that, and when I apply power, the whine starts. If I let up on the gas (no load), there is no sound.

enonrp,

Not like a problem from hard launching. Iv'e never dumped the clutch.

Thanks guys.

It could be the ring and pinion that went bad and not necessarily the diff.

ROFL, nice I hate when they won't shutup sometimes.

To anwer your question it really sounds like a hub/bearing problem. It might be able to fixed under your drivetrain warranty noticing you have an 05.

It's probably not my wife whining. She put 30,000 of the 40,000 miles on the car. The Evo is our family car...

The car is still under warranty. I'll take it in. Thanks for all the advice, I'll bring it with me.
