Go for the double,you will want another gauge anyways and its cool to look around it to read gas gauge!

I have seen them to the right. Mine isnt part of the column you have to mount it, I mounted it just off to the right of the view of my fuel gauge. Never a problem.

 

That is where I got mine. I have the center and pillar ones so I only needed the single. Single only blocks the speedo part most will not see, and kind of blocks the SES light. I think the dual would block too much on the right.

I personally have mine to the right and don't have any problems with visibility of the gauges. I will be going to the double column once I get my LC-1 though.
