Succeeded in finally besting a gremlin we've been pestered with.
Car would start right up, then slowly the idle speed would start to climb, at the same time you could smell the exhaust getting richer. Then once up around 2500 rpm it would start popping in the exhaust, like it was missing. Impressive flames from the tailpipe.
All this sitting at idle.
Replaced the intake gasket, and EGR block off plate gasket, sprayed and sprayed checking for said leak, even pressure tested the intake at 25psi and nothing. Checked for codes and was getting a knock sensor fault. Figured that was from the popping exhaust.
Pulled the piping to the intake and found if you partially covered the bleed holes in the throttle body in front of the throttle plate, the idle would drop down near where it should be.
Hmm, that's odd. Yanked the ISC off and BINGO! The thing was bound up. Swapped in a spare, fired it up, and she sat there and purred, idle where it should be, no popping exhaust, and not running rich, or setting a knock sensor code.
Finally! Now make some pulls, finish the tune, and go racing Saturday!

My car got a new thermostat and pressure cap today. No reason except it was something I forgot to do last summer. I tested the new cap to make sure it held 16 psi and then tested the old cap. The old cap didn’t hold pressure.
Over the years I’ve had a couple of pressure testers and I’ve tested many pressure caps. I found an OEM cap on an old Chevy Nova years ago that held pressure. I think one other time I found the cap on my car still worked after several years of service. Other than that they all flunked.
I figure the majority of vehicles on the road with supposedly pressurized cooling systems are actually operating the cooling system at atmospheric pressure. I don’t see cars on the side of the road due to overheating. Well, not normally but on a trip to southern California, out on the dessert in extreme heat it was common, several cars per mile.
What I’m saying, unless you know otherwise, chances are you are operating your Evo without the extra cooling capacity that comes with a pressurized system.

Installed new wheel studs and 10 mm spacers on the front wheels. Put stock brembos calipers w/ new pads and rotors on it. Reinstalled my input shafts and axles. Performed the fender mod and modified the side skirt and fenders so they no longer rubbed on the tires when turning. Installed my STM forward facing hot parts kit and Borg s257 sx-e turbo. Installed my ETS fmic and stm licp. Built a bracket for my new oil cooler and built and ran 10an lines to the oil filter housing for it. Installed my custom coolant overflow and built and ran 6an lines for it. Reinstalled my valve cover w/my new jd customs coil on plug system and arp carbon fiber spark plug cover. Installed carbon fiber air ducts on my front bumper.

Ordered a CBRD BBK Full W/ JM Fab tubular manifold and all new gaskets and hardware etc. might get Manifold shot peened (looks awesome). I'll post up when it gets here.
