I need your opinion on a used 2006 IX

Hi everyone, and I appreciate u reading this post and advising me.

So this one guy close to my neighborhood is selling his 2006 ix (GSR but not with the sunroof…etc.)
The car has 15k miles on it, 1 owner, clean title, has an exhaust, bov, and a downpipe on it and a carbon fiber hood.

The bad:
Small scratches on the front bumper, repainted rear bumper, and a check engine ligh on. He is saying that the check engine light is on because he took out the catalytic converter, and that the car is in a mint condition. He;s looking to get 20k for it.

What do u guys think of it? The guy is moving out town, and will probably won’t care if he scams me if ther ewas something wrong with the car. So my question is, what do u guy sthink of th edeal, iam kind of a newbie, and what type of stuff should I be looking in the car before buying to make sure its mechinacly good.

Cheers!

Why was the rear bumper painted? Accident? Also don't worry about the check engine light. Guy probably ran test pipe.

do you know anything about evos? or turbod cars in general?! first thing you should wonder about is going to be the clutch, if he drives perfect no launching you are going to be alright, but if it has been launched and driven hard, its gunna be slipping or soon to be, and they arent cheap. Next, the SES light, could be because of the cat, thats lagit, mine is on as week. Your always going to get some scratches on the bumper, rocks bugs whatever. 20k is about right give or take a little, that is your opinion really.

thanks for the responses guys.

ya he did say that he took the cat off and thats why the ses light is on. iam not so worried about the scratches either and with regards to the rear bumper, i think it could have had a major scratch (i hope its only that ), i was thinking of taking off the trunk's carpet and checking the chasy to see if there has been any damage...etc.

a friend of mine has also suggested to to look somewhere in the car (i don;t quite remember where he said ) to see what color is the clutch to find out if it has been replaced.

another good (atleast to my knowledge) is that the guy doesn;t have any gauges installed, so i thought that maybe he didn;t play with teh boost since there is no gauges nor a manual boost controler (do u guys think thi sis a valid argument?)

i do have knowledge of turbo cars, a good friend of mine has an evo and i have helped him work on it and i raced it as well. not an expert but i can get my self around it.

thanks,

no if your going to put the car in a high gear and step on the gas then ur checking to see if the clutch is slipping. If the rpms surge momentarily then the clutch is slipping.

ah ok so lets say the rpm goes to 4000 or higher then that would mean the clutch is basicaly worn out and its starting to slip?
thanks,

Take it for a drive and run through the gears several times to see how the Tranny shifts.

Do a couple of WOT 3rd gear pulls from 2k - 7.5k and watch for excessive smoke and performance issue.

Also do a couple of 5th gear pulls at WOT from about 2k, this will expose a slipping clutch.

Listen for whining from the Transfer Case.

Pull the CEL code just to make sure it is due to the Cat being removed.

Check the tires for indications of excessive hard driving.

Go with your gut feeling, if something doesn't feel right just walk away.

Yeah, you should get him to scan it some place and find out for yourself why the CEL is on.

just go to any pepboys or autozone and let them pull the code. They do it for free

if the needle slips would that be a clutch issue or a tranny issue?
thanks,
