whoa...glad I looked at this thread...so is this a common problem in the rear of the car or is the front something to look at as well? I will be getting JDM rear bumper so that has to come off...but the front I really don't wanna be messing with if I don't have to...anyone know if the front has issues as well?

Waking this up from the dead...

Just picked up an Evo IX MR, great shape for a North East car.

Does have some rust on the front suspension top hats, should be an easy fix.

A more problematic section with rust is the rear frame/body where the rear diff/mustache bar attaches.

It doesn't look too bad and certainly won't affect anything structurally, but I'd like to get this fixed.

I haven't pulled the rear bumper yet, but I'd assume the rear crash beam mounting points are rusted due to this thread and that I've never owned a vehicle without rust in that area.

Anybody have rust in these areas and have them fixed? DIY or body shop?

Thanks.

Another northeast car here. Spent its whole life in NH and now MA where I live. Approaching winter fast. I also have rust on my front suspension top hats. Hate the way it looks, eye sore. Underneath is a mess. How can I get it fixed/how much will it cost for professional work?

Anyone hear anything about the Ultra-Ever Dry and it's application to out cars? I can see it being an amazing solution to the salt and snow in N.E./Canada. Worst come to worst I'll contact them and ask about how we can/cannot use it on the cars slash how long it would realistically last..

Rear Floor Rail Rusted Through, appears to be inside out rust damage

Punctured with hammer and punch test the Mitsubishi is testing the front crossmembers.

Not sure if anyone else is having any distortion/ rusting just in front of the rear sub frame, photos of the left and right rear floor rails. Curious to see if this a larger issue or just me due to being from the NE but I would religiously wash the car after driving in the snow. Although I am suspecting from the area of rust water is getting inside of the rail and rusting from the inside out due to the exterior metal being rather intact and distorting.

Also if anyone has run into this problem what did you do to fix the issue?

I am assuming Mitsubishi is walking away from repairing this due to the age, unless its a wide spread issue with a structural concern, similar to their front sub frame rust recall.

Yup biggest problem area on any NE Evo. Chances are your gas tank looks the same too, entire rear subframe needs to come out gas tank as well. Then it's gotta be blasted or grinded down, rusted pieces need to be cut out, and new metal welded in. May need structural support as well depending what needs to be cut out. Won't know until you drop everything out of the way.

Then new metal hast to be treated, painted/coated, and sealed.

I'd look for an automobile restoration shop. Most body shops will turn that work away.

You're looking at a few K in labor and materials to put right.

Went through this whole topic from the beginning. Now I want to remove the rear bumper and inspect for rust. Found rust behind the front bumper bars when I installed the cusco power brace last year. I know thread ain't new but first I seen it.
