How exactly does the stock radiator fan work (pics inside)

I pulled the stock fan, and it is heavy as hell, and pretty bulky, so I want to go to a smaller thin fan, but the stock one has a big what looks to be some sort of relay or control box on it, and then has 4 wires going to the fan. What does this box do? Can you simply bypass it and hook up an aftermarket fan to the stock wires that hook into the box? Here are a few pictures to spark your minds:

I know there are a lot of you that run a thin fan for your large turbo kits, so I want to see what you think.

Thanks

buy the mishimoto small fan, cut the connector with the 2 wires going to the controller . You will need to solder the wires coming from your slim fan to the connector.

Your all set : )

where do you mount the control box? I have a slim fan and cut the wires and soldered them to the connector wires and connected it to the control/relay box, so where does this box go now, can I just mount it anywhere?

thanks

Well I know that, I mounted it on my frame, but I'm wondering if this box has to be right next to the fan and radiator like it is stock to detect temperature. because if you look at the backside of this box, there's like little metal pins that look like it can detect temperature to tell when the fan turns on or off, is this right or can i just mount it anywhere?

thanks

I don't want to know how to solder new wires, I want to know how the stock fan works. What does that control box do? Is it necessary?

So this would completely bypass that control box on the fan? If so, that is exactly what I was asking about. Do you know what that box does? I would like to know what I would be losing by removing it? I assume its just some speed control based on a certain parameter, like the a/c being on, or something?

No, Im still using the controller. I have it mounted on the frame.
Not sure what exactly the control box does....but I think that fan only turns on when you have the ac on.

Does anyone else know? What does everyone else do when they go big turbo and need the smaller fan?

You reuse the box and just wire in a new pigtail/harness for the new fan....

yes, re-use the lil box... its a relay. it does not sense temperatures, it has the lil metal pins because it gets hot & needs to disperse that heat... so try & mount the lil box somewhere away from heat.

The only problem I see is that it that it has 4 wires coming off of it. I assume I use two of them?
