So yeah ... this happened while driving home yesterday ...
This exact thing just happened to me on a road trip through Pennsylvania, the same window on my 2009 lancer DE! That is crazy. I live up here in Toronto Canada, me and my girlfriend have been trying to fight with Mitsubishi about them covering it, but they said they have not heard about anythig like this happening. I know it is possible to have a faulty point in the glass. We had our windows up, the AC was on and it wasn't a overly hot day out, the car only had 15,000 km. Wow now that I know that this has happened to someone else, i am definately fighting this.
Tempered glass can just spontaneously shatter ... it happens. It's not even a rare occurrence, just uncommon.
Well in my case we were the only ones driving east in the right lane on the road and one car was driving west in the left lane, there was also a 3' concrete barrier separating the 2, it is hard to believe that a rock was shot across over the barrier and happen to hit my driver side window. It is just hard to believe.
I have seen it happen on mkiv Jettas. If the rear window bolts that connect the glass to the regulator aren't torqued properly it will cause the glass to shatter without notice. I would just pay out of pocket for it though, it shouldn't be more than an hour of labor.
