who is to blame for "abusive" driving?
i dont work there anymore, but i sold about 30 evos at concord mitsubishi in northern california, and they have sold another 15-20 sicne then, and not one left the lot with more than 8 miles, not one was test driven, brank spikkity spankin new, and when i bought mine, i cant tell you how nice it was to see 3 miles on there (they come in 3-8).... its respect.
It's probably in the dealers' interest to designate a "demo" car.
A dealer in MA was giving test drives in a new one, and the brakes weren't seated, the release coating wasn't off the tires, and the car made a really poor impression -- mediocre stopping, tons of "push" in tight corners, etc. It left a poor enough impression that I almost bought an STi instead. (Fortunately for Mitsu, the local Scooby dealer is a complete slug.)
I bought an unused EVO (by having another dealer call me when the specific color arrived), and followed the break-in procedures. Now the car handles vastly better than that test drive indicated.

When I bought mine back in March, I spoke with a salesman for 2 minutes about the car and he asked me if I wanted to test drive one.. Of couse I said yes.. I knew about the break-in procedure so I was being very nice to it.. The guy is like, "Get on it!" So I did, just a little, still keeping it under 5k... He says "go man, rip it up some".. So I was like Ok! I aint buyin this one today.. I ripped it up plenty good, no launches though... I ended up scaring the hell outa him..
Back at the dealership, the manager asks if he get the "numbers" straight, will I buy the EVO I just drove.. (It was the only one there, they hadn't gotten any yet).. I said, Hell No!! I'll get a new one as it comes in.. So 3 hours later, sure enough, the truck rolls in with 5 brand new EVO's.. Mine had 3 miles on it.. Very nice... But I do know that they ripped the hell outa the "DEMO" car that I drove.. Blew out the clutch in it, a week later... Go figure...
