notchy 3rd grinding 5th???

just recently i noticed that 3rd gear sometimes is a little harder to go into gear and if im shifting above 50mph into 5th it will have a small grinding sound.

i know 3rd and 5th are not on the same synchro so i kind of threw that one out.. would clutch adjustment have any effect?

If your clutch grabs when you're only an inch or so from the floor, you can try adjusting it. If it grabs around the center of the travel or higher, plan on throwing new synchros in it.

Not to thread jack....

I have not noticed any issue with 3rd gear, but i noticed going from 4th to 5th will make a small grind noise (never locks out) ONLY if I go for a fast shift... if I take a complete second or 1.5 seconds to shift there is no issue at all, I wondered if it was a synchro issue... but i just baby 4-th to 5th

Does yours grind into 5th if you go slow?

nope not at all.. but if i do it fast or higher speed/RPMS it will do a slight grind/scratch

i guess im going to drain the fluid and see if i see any brass or gold color.. i dont think its a blocking plate but 3rd is starting to get notchy...

is it worth it to get 1 synchro or should i just do a shep rebuild or bushwacker?

My trans does the 5th gear grind at high revs/quick shift as well. I was told that its a synchro issue (its been doing this since i got the car at 20k. My Buddies car did it too but hes got almost 80k on his. He got his trans rebuilt by Mitsu and it doesnt do it anymore that i know of. But as long as you baby it in 5th gear i would imagine it will last for awhile. My car now has 36k on it and it still only does it on High revs/quick shifts. So just take it slow on 5th gear.

The third gear issue i do not know. I do not have that issue sorry.

I hope this will be the same for me! got the car at 36k, its now at 37k Ill be happy with another 10-20k and no synchro issue.... I have not noticed any high rev shift grinds, just the 4th to 5th..

Sorry OP you can have your thread back, good luck!

These are all 5 speed trannys that are having this problem? I would expect the 6 speeds to go out before the 5 speeds from what I have read on this forum

Had the exact same problem as the OP. After getting my tranny rebuilt, the grinds and hard shifing never came back. Transmission needs a rebuild.
