Help! There's mold in my AC

I have a 2006 Evo IX MR. Every time I turn on the AC, I am inundated with a mold smell for the first 5 minutes, then the smell goes away (or maybe I just got used to it). I figure that the cooling coils must have developed a lot of condensation, and led to mold growth. How do I get at it to clean it out? I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I live in a relatively low-humidity climate, and I don't use a steam humidifier in my car or anything, so I am thinking if I have this problem, some other people must have it too!

There's stuff you can buy at any local auto parts store that you spray in the intake for your a/c system that will get rid of the mold and any smells.

Frigi Fresh by BG products.

Remove cabin filter, turn on AC, and spray inside. Re install cabin filter, no more smell.

ok, thanks guys. This sounds intriguing. Does Frigi-Fresh just cover up the smell, or does it actually get rid of the mold? I don't do well with strong fragrances.

If you have AC and use it, you have mold.

Apparently common sense is not as common as we all think.

He is saying take the old filter out, spray the inside of the a/c system then install a new filter.

QFH.

As everyone else said, change the cabin filter. IF your mold comes back I would start looking at other components.

All I want to bring attention to a detail that may have been missed. I only get the mold smell when I run the AC. I never get the mold smell when I run the vent, either in fresh air mode or recirc mode. Does this still point to the cabin air filter, because my understanding is that the cabin air filter is in the airflow, both with and without AC.

Make sure the drip line from the core in the dash is not clogged. I have seen this on a lot of cars. It causes the moisture to stay in the vents and forms mold.

I don't think my 04 Evo has an air cabin filter. hmmm... I would just spray lysol in the vents inside and the outside air vents and that might help. I did that to my wife's jetta and it worked.

Think about it, the evaporator is cold and condenses water anytime the AC is run. So, the core is always wet. Now, blow through lots of air with dirt, filtered or not, and you have food for mold. Finally, park the car in the warm sun with water and food present and you can be sure something is growing in there and this is true for any car.

You can spray stuff in there and maybe that helps but basically this is just the way it is.
