If all you do is change the filter then its legal. Anything after the MAF is fine as long as you arent messing with the intake tube, thats straight from the cali ref...I saw him earlier in the year for having an "illegal" intake.

Stuff after the MAF is considered kind of like a cat back exhaust, its not affecting emmissions. Mess with the maf tube and thats a different story. If the air intake tube has any breather lines in it then legally you can't change it, same with the airbox. Since the evo has no breather hoses going to the airbox ANY filter setup after the MAF is technically legal...officer discression however is a different story.

I put the stock airbox on for the inspection but also brought my Apexi intake with me. He told me he would have passed the car with the aftermarket cone filter on it just fine because of the info I posted above. He also said most of these tickets are just the case of a guy wanting to be a dick his boss wouldn't let him give that to me in writing though (the law part not the cop bashing )

thanks for the info sho669. i originally just wanted to put a cone filter on the stock intake tube. the AEM is carb legal so if i get my hood popped im good to go. a ref ticket is that last thing i need.

Just get a K&N drop-in filter. Save your money.
