I seriously doubt you will get over 30k for your car (or well, any evo) in ON. Totally not sure about QC though. For reference, stanley bought his for ~25k and sold it for 23k, carson bought his (05, 17k miles, fully buschur built, cleanest evo I've EVER seen...at the time) for 30k or less. I got mine for 20k. And these are all prices from 2010. And as you probably know guys from ON will barely ever touch a car coming from QC. Hell they won't even buy one from Ottawa because of how close it is to QC.

Keep it. Its hard enough finding a clean evo and it gets harder every day. You won't be making any financial gain from it IMO. Well possibly, if the import taxes into CA are severe enough...

EDIT: Seems like they won't fetch that much in QC either: http://evoquebec.forumactif.net/t124...-viii-2003-23l

In terms of the evo with the salvage title in the link with over 62k miles, I still think the fact he is asking almost $23k explains enough on the value of evo's here in Canada. Most guys in QC get top dollar for their evo's and many people from Ottawa/Toronto have inquired about my car even without putting it up for sale at all. The last IX in QC that I have seen, sold for $28k and he was bone stock with more mileage than me, and there is one on auto trader right now with about 70k miles for $25k.

I know Stanley was in a hurry to get rid of his IX and personally I thought he could have gotten more for it. I'm not desperate to sell, so I don't plan to take a hit (especially in Canada) for my clean title, one previous owner, IX RS with well below 50k miles. I'm just weighing the options of bringing it with me, storing it or potentially selling and buying one in California (or another car since all I have ever owned was Mistu's :P) and starting all over again. Damn cars always make me think too much...

Thanks for the input though Dee and everyone else who contributed to this thread. It has been a great help and is making my decision a bit easier.

Then Quebec's market is a lot better for evos! I didn't know tallulah's car was salvage. Southern ON is actually getting a bit saturated IMO. There are quite a lot more clean ones there. It used to be rare bumping into one in the first place. Now I'm even bumping into one of the same red colour (not even the same guy) every time I go there. It's all because of Marco dammit!

My vote is on keep and drive your evo!

OK, the information I received from the AAA specialist that used to do this as his job matches what I noted in my previous posts. CA no longer allows AAA to complete the out of country registration, so his experience is outdated by 4 years, but he was referencing the current CA vehicle code to confirm details.

You need to contact the US DOT, so that you can obtain a Bond Release letter This letter will declare that the vehicle meets US federal safety standards, even though it was not sold as new in the US.

You may need to obtain documentation from the manufacturers via your VIN. Mitsu can provide these documents to you, which you will need to provide to the US DOT. However, if your car has a label that reads 49 state or 50 state compliant, then that is the evidence needed. This is under hood. A letter from the manufacturer is best.

The key here is you need to be able to prove your original purchase and residency in Canada. i.e. prove you are not an importer. Prove that the vehicle meets Federal Emissions and safety standards (no necessarily CAs).

If your EVO passes FMVSS, (federal motor vehicle safety standards), bumpers and theft this or that, which is proven by the above then it just needs to pass CA smog. It does not need to adhere or convert to all CA emissions mechanicals. It does have to be able to pass CA smog. (again, with a good tune and stock cat, you will).

The other admin piece you will need is a document from the US customs department. I was told you would need one of these forms; 7501,3461,6059,3299,4811,43311. However researching those was vague at best. You will likely get those docs when you enter the US with the car. If you are using a shipper that is trucking the car for you they will already know this stuff, and you just need to get the docs from them. You will need those docs at the CA DMV.

If you want to research to back up the process, since the DMV employee you go to may not even know, the reference is that this is in the Direct Imports section of the CA DMV Manual chapter 10.035. I couldn't find that easily online, but he had the book in his hand, so I know it exists. I believe however the key is that you have an exception to the Direct Imports regulations, because you can demonstrate your vehicle purchase in Canada and its registration and ownership there. Again, proving that you are not an importer. Then pass smog. Welcome.

Good Luck.

Hmmm in terms of documentation for DOT and the manufacturers letter from mistubishi, couldn't they obtain that all from inspection of my vehicle and checking the VIN numbers on the car in person?

In terms of minor mods like an intake, intercooler, IC piping etc. would all of that have to be removed for inspection as well to make sure it conforms to CA laws and is as stock as possible?

Thanks very much for all your help, it is really appreciated during this time!

You can find an evo in CA really easily, why not just sell your current evo and save yourself all the cost and hassle of trying to bring it to the US?

You are going to have to pay additional fees to bring the car into the state, transportation, smog and so on.

If you buy one here, you pay registration, insurance, taxes and you're done. (Smog is the sellers responsibility)

Yes, to your earlier question about law enforcement. These cars are profiled, thanks to the Fast and the Furious movies and idiots that like to street race. You will get attention and you will get pulled over. Stock these cars get way too much attention from local law enforcement. I've been pulled over a few times and most of the time they believe that my OEM wheels, spoiler, brembos and so on were added by me.

That's just part of living in CA with a performance import car.

golgo13 may be more correct than I, but just for perspective I'll tell you my experience with law enforcement here in CA. I had a super loud Suby for 3 years here. Barely barely would pass smog. Only time I got pulled over was chasing the very first ever Bugatti I saw. reduced to an 80 in a 55 ticket. No hassle over the car.

Then I bought the EVO, salvage title. Easy to register and smog surprisingly, and it was still a mess of hodge podge parts. Got pulled over right off. Just checking for theft, because I stalled it at a light in front of Sheriff. No hassle, just checked all the papers. Have been pulled over 3 times since. Brisk pace, legally speeding, but just a warning.

The only time I got hosed, was traveling on a route that is patrolled by CHP. Not speeding (in traffic), hassled for tint and front plate. Wrote me a front plate missing fix it ticket.

If you drive in LA county or possibly anywhere where CHP is patrolling a front plate is cited. In Orange County where I live its less so, but still the law.

All in all there are so many EVOs I don't feel like I have been singled out much, however my car is relatively quiet, but does have a coffee can exhaust tip.

Everyone's experience is different, and CHP staff I have found are very unfriendly, particularly the women. Its too bad, because they do a very important job, but I think their attitudes towards serve and protect get messed up over the years.

It could really depend lots on where you will be living.
