Torn between the STM kit or the Map kit. I like STM's price but I also like the fact that the Map kit includes brackets and it comes with a Setrab core. Which one will provide the best cooling?

Not replacing my stocker for any reason really. I just feel like blowing some money right now but I don't want to spend more than I have to. I live in San Diego btw so it can get hot on occasions.

BTW I know this is an old thread, sue me.

There is lots of input being said here over what is the best one, but does anyone have any data to show temp differences between these manufacturers, all using the same size core? Im willing to bet there isn't more than a few degrees, at most, difference between an Earls,B&M, or setrab cooler. These will all work, go with what you can afford and source easiest for your setup and needs. my .02 ymmv

Build your own? After much debate I ended up ordering from http://www.improvedracing.com/. They have everything you need to piece together. Even a thermostat if you want a huge core. Based on a Setrab 25 row, Series 6 core, with all fittings and Setrab's mounting bracket, came to $324 shipped ($299 shipped less the bracket). Though unlike MAP or AMS kits, with Evo specific brackets, you will need some fab skills to fit them perfectly. But imo, saving an easy $150 over MAPs and $280 over AMS is worth the little time invested. (Side note: For MAPs price, you could essentially have a 40 row. For AMSs price you could have a 50 row!)

That company also carries Mocal. Though many have experienced leaking with Mocal cores. Setrab is industry leading with many applications of OEM. Its without a doubt, the best oil cooler you can buy.

Good luck!

Edit: They dont carry the adapter needed at the OFH, at least for Evo 8/9s (M18x1.5 to -AN). Aeromotive does though, and prob every major vendor has it.

wang4u,

Curious, is there room to go with a larger oil cooler? If you had to do it over again would you do anything different? I'm in GA and need the best cooling possible.

Thats a good question. Unfortunately I have an Evo 5 so I dont know the 8/9 dimensions. On the 5, I could prob fit the 40 row in the same location. See pic for example. I dont think larger than 25 is possible in the stock location on 8/9:

Heres a Mocal 25 row on Evo 8. No extra space. That guy says it barely fits within the bumper.

And Setrab 19 row on Evo 5. Notice how much more room we have. If he mounted it with the hoses facing inward, just judging by the pic, there is at least another 5" if not more.

I havent installed my kit just yet, havent had time. At some point, Im getting the motor built and installing a FP Black. If I run into cooling issues, I will definitely jump to a bigger core. But many on MLR have stated the Setrab 19 row can support 500-550bhp, and the 25 beyond that. Should be more than enough.
