When I lived in NJ and I saw a cop I would simply push the clutch in until I passed them and I very rarely got messed with. Obviously the cheapest solution, you just need to be very aware of the police being around, where they sit, etc....

Live in FL and they never hassle me, pretty much if you can get the car registered and a plate for it down here you can literally drive any POS car around spewing oil and what not... Zero emissions is great for me owning an Evo but annoying as hell when cruising around behind someone with a POS burning tons of oil and something screwed up making it stink.

Been lucky so far. I have a cannonball shooter (Tomei Ti Expreme) and haven't been stopped and my car is obnoxious.

In GA there is no decibel law. Its up to the discretion of the cop stopping you.

When I first got my Evo it had a Megan 3" exhaust system with no cat. The volume didn't bother me much but it drove my neighbors and GF at the time crazy. I picked up a custom made 3" vibrant muffler for the cat position off a local Evo owner and it made a world of difference. I'm obviously still not stock appearing but I have no more drone which is what seems to catch the cops ears around here (Seattle area). I was just driving through a town notorious for pulling people over for modified exhaust this weekend, Federal Way, and rolled past a few cops without them giving me a second look. So far I haven't been pulled over once. I have no tint and no wing so that might help also...who knows. I definitely recommend a muffler in the cat position though.

Thanks guys for all the good suggestions. And you are right Chicago cops are very cool! It was a home town police and smaller suburbs that are giving me a hard time. And yes I have 2 $100 tickets. I have a HKS muffler and a high flow cat. I talked to AMS and they suggested a resonated test pipe.

The prob isnt only the decibel level. Most states have laws stating that you cannot modify a factory exhaust system. This means a cutout, silencer, extra resonators, ect. will not help your case.

Dont drive around at WOT or cruise around in 1st gear at 6k rpm and you wont get harrassed.

I'm sure most of us share your pain as getting pulled over for making noise is no fun. Pressing in clutch as said above can help or even things like not having super dark tinted windows (and not dressing like you stole the car) can go a long ways. Ya Washington state law is pretty lame.. cannot modify the exhaust at all. I usually tell the officer the car is louder because of the cams and not the exhaust

Weld in a 3" louvered core resonator an call it a day. RRE sells them: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/exhaustparts.htm. The exhaust silencers you stick in the muffler are worthless. My Evo has a 3" Apexi turbo back with a resonator and a high flow cat and it is pretty quiet, just like I like it!

But as a few others have said in most states you can still get a ticket for a modified exhaust system, regardless of how loud it is. However with that being said if it isn't loud you most likely won't be bothered by local law enforcement about it.

I got pulled over in Boston last month by a state trooper, said my evo was too loud. Then a lamborghini went screaming by and he said it sounded "mean"? Yet I was the one getting a ticket... When I swapped my test pipe for a high flow cat it quieted down a good amount.

I have a Greddy TI with a 3 inch downpipe and a STM 3 inch test pipe. a friend of mine has compared the sound to a stealth bomber jokingly and i have yet to be pulled over.

What you need to do instead of altering your set up, is get the officers names and employee numbers or badge numbers, go to internal affairs and file a harassment compliant. TRUST ME with the quickness if they run into you again they wont bother anymore.

I work for my county's sheriff's office, and when something like this take's place that means its time to contact IA. i think being put in the penalty box for a few months and or few day suspension for harassment will make them think twice about doing that again....

Don't forget to vote in the local elections when their funding is up for renewal. Here in the D they are so busy with real crime after being defunded that I *never* see police here being jerks on the highway. There is simply too much real crime.

A bored police department is an overfunded one. Vote against the budget and make those bored ones find another profession.
