thats the same here in the ft lauderdale and miami area, i rarely see them harassing people about exhaust systems, that is unless your a youngster at a street racing spot. Then yes they will mess with you, but as i said i just turned 29 years old, my evo sounds EXTREMELY loud with my current exhaust set up, and i take her out mostly on weekends, cruising around town or whatever and i never have been harassed like that.

as for voting to take away funds.... really ?????? everyone needs a job, i don't believe anyone deserves to lose one. especially how the economy is now.

If he is getting pulled over for breaking the law, then he is not being harassed. You should know this based on your claimed job. I just looked up the exhaust requirements is Illinois, the OP's state, and here is a quote from the Illinois Vehicle Code:

(625 ILCS 5/12-602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-602)
Sec. 12-602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.
(Source: P.A. 77-37.)

As you see there is no decibel limit. If it is has been modified and is now louder then stock, it is illegal. Simple as that. You will find that most states have very similar statutes when it comes to altering exhaust systems.

You are right. That's why I didn’t give any of the police officers any grief. And to tell you the truth all of them were anticipating seeing a much younger driver. One of the officers was very funny he said I should know better I was old enough to be his dad.

Anyway I am going to go with the stealth system. If that doesn’t work I am selling it and buying a GTR or a R8. I know for a fact the R8 is much louder then my HKS the only difference is that the R8 comes that loud from the factory.

every state has different statutes , as well as every county, borough or whatever their called per state also has their own rules and regulations. the way the thread starter posted his problem, sounds more like harassment to me... what cops really nitpick and check peoples cars for altered exhaust ??? sounds like their just being *******s

There is no need to toss the EVO and buy a new vehicle over this issue. Simply have a resonator welded in and/or go with a different muffler. It will be much cheaper and you will still have 4 doors!

I said MOST states have SIMILAIR statues. A county or city can can make more restrictive regulations then the state but not more lax. For instance, if a state were to say that exhaust noise has to be less then 92 decibels, a city can say in our city the limit is 86 decibels. They can not make it 94 decibels.

On a modified car with a LOUD exhaust, a cop doesn't need to "check" for an altered exhaust. It is blatantly obvious. Issuing a ticket for blatantly breaking the law is not harassment, it is the cops job and sworn duty as a LAW ENFORCEMENT officer.

Back when my DSM was non-turbo it was ungodly loud and I was pulled over a number of times for improper exhaust and once I was even issued a citation for it. So I have been in the same position as the OP. If you want to modify your car and increase the performance AND drive it on the street, (like most of us here do, myself included) just try to keep the noise down and you will be left alone by the police. Something as simple as welding in a resonator, like I posted a link to above, will lower your exhaust noise quite a bit without sacrificing any noticeable power and you will be left alone by the cops. Win, win.

I work for my county's sheriff's office, and when something like this take's place that means its time to contact IA. i think being put in the penalty box for a few months and or few day suspension for harassment will make them think twice about doing that again....
Very glad to know about this although as I mentioned I live in FL also basically in the same area and they never bother me but this is good to know in the event they try to

Thank you Mr.cochran..... i see you like to use caps alot, thats not necessary.

Anyways Once again, the threadstarter shouldnt have to alter his exhaust, because some cop has too much spare time on his hands, and the dunkin doughnuts drive thru is jammed. i dont give a rat's *** how they do it in "ol El Paso" but here in in SoFla which is a very busy and populated area, and just in case you doubted my employment i work for the broward county sheriff's office i know how cops are here and speaking from my experience most cops whether their county, city, or even state would even blink an eye a altered muffler.

Once again if you feel your a lawyer and you feel like reading more statutes , rules and regulations, maybe you should start chasing ambulances and passing out your business card

if its loud enough to get you pulled over, you likely deserve it. just because you like to hear your engine, doesnt mean everyone else does. also, not everyone works m-f 9-5. only thing more annoying than a loud car waking me up, is a loud harley.

Though I hear you, and think you are right to some degree... sometimes cops are retarded and do have too much time on their hands... even without a completely obnoxious exahust as you would be refering to, you can still be pulled over...

On a side note, I'm still young enough that I like my car to be obnoxiously loud and cammed out. I give it a year.
