Info On EVO's Please

Hello all…

Been looking for a fourm like this for a while.
I'm not an EVO owner, but am considering getting one
in the NEAR FUTURE.

I have spoken to many people about them, but seeing as none
of these people actually own one I'd be much better off speaking
to an owner (or two )

My MAIN concern is rumours that EVOs (7&8) need to be surviced
every couple thousand miles or every 2 - 3 months, is this true?
Also on avarage for someone who isnt going to modify the car
what in your own opinions consider to be the yearly running cost
of and EVO 7 or 8?
I'm more swayed towards the 8 more that the 7 but if I was to go for a 7
one maybe 2/3 years old what should I be looking out for when checking
over?

PS: For next car I'm looking at EVO, Scooby, Audi S3, Pug 406 coupe V6 3.0, opinions if you would)
Thanks for your help in advance

where do you live? Most of the people here are from the US and have only experienced the Evo VIII. I see 'punto, pug, and S3' in your post which leads me to believe you are in the UK.

If this is correct, then yes, if you drive your Evo a lot, you will be in for service fairly often due to the mandatory service intervals of the electronic gizmos on your Evo VIII's.

The Evo is not a cheap car to maintain. The tires are not inexpensive. And they need replacing fairly often. Mobil 1 synth is required at oil changes. The clutch will wear out very quickly if you drag race. But I suspect you do not do much of that.

I've really come to the conclusion that the Evo is a supercar that regular people can afford. But the maint. costs are still that of a super car.

Maintenance cost can seem high for some...but it really isn't bad. Definitely not that of a "supercar" . An oil change by the dealer every 3000-4000 miles is only $50. Or do it yourself for $25. Other than that the only other added cost is running premium unleaded. There are plenty of good replacement tires that are cheaper than the Advans...although the Advans are probably the best performing street tire you will find.
If you aren't in the US than you may have added cost for servicing the ACD every 12000 miles or so.
Also, replacing tranny/diff fluids at around 12000 miles is recommended but also not real costly

this is a pace for all evo owners... but like chimp said most of us are in the United States and have litlle to no experience with the evo VII

as far as the clutch goes if you have had experience with a MT and you don't drag race all the time you should be good to go... i have had my clutch for over 5500 miles... which doesn't seem like alot, however... i drag race my Evo 8 every once in a while and have had no problems with it. i have had 7 MT's before this and raced every one of them and still haven't lost a clutch... i think everyone who is having a problem with their car is launching at every light or something along those lines, plus most of them are young kids.... who this happens to be there first or second car so they are not quite in tune with their driving abilities

Brake pads = 2x the cost of the ones I bought for my previous Type R Integra

Brake rotors = 3x the cost of replacement blanks for that same Integra.

Synth Oil = 3x as expensive as dino oil.

Clutch = $1500. It'll need it by 40k...or by 5k if you drag race. I've never had to replace a clutch in ANY car I have ever driven. And I have driven over 250,000miles in my driving years.

And if you are in a country that has Evo's with active components, you have the 5k service intervals for the AYC fluid and acd hardware. This is no $50 service if and when there is a part that needs replacing.

I'm not trying to paint this car out to be REALLY expensive. But it is going to be much more expensive to maintain than every other car on his list.

SC~

I think the root of the problem with the clutches is somewhere between the steering wheel and the seat.

The Mobil1 oil changes could be worse!
My ML320 takes 0w with a capacity of 8.5qts!
It's only a V6!

-Patiently awaiting the '04 10/100K Evo's release...

if i were you i'd get the evo instead of all those other things... it's not really a big hassle to keep it in shape. and, it'll come natural for you to take care of that baby...

i have the V, and i just treat is just like a normal car... since it really is just a car. yet it's something you can toy around with, having all those possible mods to blow fire outa the exhaust...

i'd also take the 7, it just has the look and there isn't as much of it as the 8.

Where is this data from ? The 40K replacement? I too have driven many, many hundreds of thousands of miles, nothing indicates to me that my clutch will be gone at 40K, I'm currently at 18K miles, daily driven (heavy traffic). I do not drag race. I'm also stock, which is probably key.
