Oh crud...did i jack up my engine?
On the manual it says that before I hit 2k miles (or something like that) i shouldn't exceed 4krpm at max...but i usually shift at 4 or even 5 sometimes (have around 1200miles now)...
not much of a problem right?
but just yesterday...I was gunning it with friends in the car because they wanted to see the power of my car...but I misshifted
...i kept shifting at 5-6k rpm (tried best to not to go to redline since i've got another 1000 or so miles to go before i can break in the engine) but from 3rd gear i accidently went to 2nd gear so what i looked at tach, the rpm was at 8k
so of course i was like 'OH ****" and immediately braked...you think that did any harm to the engine since the ecu limits rpm to redline (or so i've been told) and since i broke the engine too early?

you will be fine.... the best way to break in a motor is to get on it. you have to create some pressure to seal the rings. mitsu, as well as every other car manufacturer on the planet does this as soon as the car is off the line... they strap it on a dyno and run it up to redline at full throttle a number of times.
the main reason for the "nice" breakin period is for the clutch.

I bought mine 2 months ago...the 03 year (is 04 out already or something?)
anyway...well at least I know that I didn't jack up the engine...so I did officially break in the engine now right? so now it doesn't matter whether i shift at 7 or whatever?

As for the mis-shift, that's potentially a problem. If you go from the top of 3rd gear into 4th, you can mechanically over-rev the engine. Unfortunately, the ECU cannot protect you in these circumstances. The rev limiter works by cutting fuel above a certain RPM. It won't protect you from a mechanical over-rev (bent valves, etc.).
There's a proper way to shift that's been used by road racers since the 1950's. You basically push the lever into gear by applying pressure on the ball with your palm against each gate...not by grabbing the lever with your fingers and firmly shoving it into gear. The motion is like pushing a plate of food away from you on a table.

Notice how each gear change uses it's own hand position. That way you never miss a gear even when cornering hard and the tranny is moving around. Pay paricular attention to pictures 6, 7, and 8. These are the ones that save you from blowing up your engine.

Also, once and for all regarding break in:
You want high cylinder pressures, but low heat. Of course the two go hand and hand, but the idea is to find a happy medium. Run it trough the gears a few times, then cruise, repeat.

Do you honestly think people driving your car off the cargoloader were respecting the so called "Breakin Procedure"? I think not.
