Too bad they only "sound good" because of an engineering flaw. I'll take a porsche boxer sound over the STi boxer sound

And I completely agree, they need to bring the JDM 2.0 back

I think at the end of the day it's silly to bench race, when people could be out on the track flogging their cars to see what they're truly capable of.

Just my opinion though!

Completely agree. I've seen Ferrari 430 Scuderia, GT-R, Evos and STis beat by Miatas at my local track. It's all about the driver mod!

Both are fantastic cars. I can't comment with any validity regarding the GR platform specifically, but I did own a mint, 100% stock 04 STi for over two years before my Evos. The cars are a hoot, the gearbox is amazing, and the 'shove' of torque makes STi's feel 'faster' even in stock form than both of my VIII's making well over 300whp. I never took any of these cars to the track, so I can't add anything there aside from my ownership driving experiences.

Stock trim:

'06 STi S204 (320hp) #31 (not-so-stock, btw.)

'05 Evo 8 MR FQ400 (405hp) #67
'10 STi Cosworth CS400 (400hp) #106

Faster? Handle better? I'll let the above speak for itself..

As far as response to modding goes, both will be close to about the 400hp neighborhood. After that, when you have to get serious with doing a built motor/giant turbo these two cars part ways. To date, the highest horsepower STi I've ever seen was making a bit over 800hp with a a stroked motor, huge turbo, & a 150 shot of NOS to help out during the turbo lag. Highest horsepower Evo? AMS: 1,100+? English Racing: 1,100+? just to name a few.. I know they're not the only ones.

To be honest, I'm a fan of both. As much as I love & respect STi's, the Evo will always be closer to my heart. Personal preference. As fellow Evo owners, I'm sure most of you have at some point or another been asked what the difference is between the two, & why did you go with the Evo instead of the STi? After having driven many many different cars of all types in my years of driving from a 60's Impala, to a Prius, to an F350 diesel, to an F430, to an Rolls Royce Ghost, & so many more in between those - I've developed a personal philosophy pertaining personal vehicle preference. It's more of an analogy between cars & women. Heck, what else are men more passionate about than these two!? Here it is. My philosophy of what I look for in a car:

1. You gotta love the way it looks!
2. You gotta love it despite any flaws it may have. (Face it. No one car is 100% perfect, just the way you want it! Unless you had the chance/ability to design one yourself ground-up, there will always be something you wish was different. Your modding addiction is a testament to that).
3. It has to feel good when you're inside!
4. If your wandering eye starts considering other options, & your heart has not felt the deep sensation of satisfaction lately - try taking it for a long, hard drive. Passion can so quickly become reignited when you connect with your car again the way you did upon first acquiring it! Purposeful time spent together will always bring the passion back! We often think that what's better is still out there somewhere, & don't realize that we already own it, until we lose it! Does your car satisfy your motoring desire?

Boy, does my Evo do a killer job of fulfilling the above criteria! I'm sure most of you could say the same about your Evo as well. While some of you just might need to get up some Saturday morning at 5a.m. & go on a good drive. Remind yourself why you bought an Evo!

Nice to see how well the evo holds its on. The STI seems to be more popular so i hear a whole lot of biased opinions towards it, and the likes of S2K's as well.

After slight modifications i drove my friends it sounds cool but my 8 demolishes his subie in cornering and power. Lets just say he drove my car and simple put he wants in evo. Hes like for a track car your car is easier to work on and way cheaper to maintain His lady friend has a swapped jdm 2.0 wrx bug eye and that engine is so much nicer and u can rev it to 8 grand without it exploding all over like a 2.5 will. I like the subie for a daily but the evo is such a good platform to just tinker with over an sti. Btw friend does track days i never have but do want to start. I also own a s2k and thats a totally different machine compared to an evo

I trust Best Motoring before some arm chair racers over the internet.

Great vids! Honestly it's all about personal taste. For me it was the rarity of the Evo and I just prefer the looks over the sti's. When my car is known around where i live as THAT Evo it brings a grin to my face every time.

ok- here are some details-

I personally built a 2005 sti (went from new to- built shortblock, 35R rotated mount)... our blue TA car was my 2005 evo 8 (obviously built)... an evo ix (basic bolt ons)... 2008 STI (we had two at the shop ourselves that we owned)... the evo X (our own)... GTR (our own) and so on...

We tune lots of both-----

The sti is good to about 330whp on our dyno reliably (when I say this I mean road racing/autox/driven hard- not babied).... before it needs forged pistons--

The transmission is AWESOME- such a beefy trans (as opposed to a WRX)...

The motor builds on STI's arent much more than an evo if kept basic- but cams etc (because of their being 4 ) is alot more...

IF you want to make big power even on a built block you have to do a rotated mount turbo and fmic- which is pricey on these cars- and LOTS of piping- and the tuning is more complicated than the evo (which is why I think alot of subaru shops do well with the evo X's because the ecu's share some more common traits as far as tuning in my opinion)....

The evo's have a killer block (8/9 or X in my opinion)..... and you can make ridiculous power---

that being said- the Subarus in most peoples opinions are a little more daily driver friendly- and I cant say I disagree- but I for one dont like the seating position or steering feel compared to the evo-

We have multiple clients who track an evo and daily drive an Sti- which I think says alot-

I like both--- but I LOVE evo's

cheers

If you've ever tried to work on a boxer motor, you'd know they are not nearly as friendly or fun to work on as the 4g63.

For this reason, and many more. The evo is a better car.

I vote for the 2g DSM :O

J/k

I have some friends with evo 8 and a few with sti. I have never seen them race. However having been in both of them as a passenger I would agree that they are basically equal. It comes down to the driver as long as bolt on for bolt on are equal.

If I had to choose my favorite it would deff be the Evo.

my .02 is the same as most it has alot to do with the driver. I looked at the newer hatch sti's before picking up my mr. if you have a complete purpose behind that will help with your decision.

personally i would stay with the older mr. the motor is trusted and can take alot more abuse than the sti motor. i.m.o.

I love both, obviously own the evo cause i prefer them...by far. I just find it funny how people are on the sti ******* when they really know nothing more than being able to identify one in a parking lot. Very cocky crowd of owners, least in my area..more so from the younger crowd.
