So tell me about these things

Ok,

So it may say Newbie under my name. The reason for this sis because I do tons of searching in this forum and I usually find a wealth of knowledge. I would like to thank everyone for this!!!!

Please do not get pissed when I ask these two questions. I am not complaining about my car. It is loved every day.

1.) how do you know that your transfer case is broken? ( I made a left turn today and heard a POP sound from the front left side of the car today)

2.)The big question I have tonight is that there is a metallic sound coming from underneath the car towards the engine. The sound is there whenthe clutch is out but when I push it in the sound is gone. WTF is this. I know people have this and the dealership tells me it is normal. It has done this since day 1. It also makes the sound during driving and goes away when I push the clutch in.

Sorry about this but what the hey. Thanks again to all.

John

1. If it isn't repeatable, I’d say you’re alright. The evo makes lots of weird clunks and pops.

2. It's your throw out bearing. I have the noise as well, along with a good deal of clutch pedal vibration. It's not "normal", but it's not worth having the dealer tear into your car to fix. Just replace it at the next clutch change.

I thought the throw-out bearing was the bearing the clutch pushes against when it's pushed in. In that case, why would you hear the sound only when the clutch is out? Does it rattle around in there or something?
I get that sound too, not really worried, just curious.

You always hear a bad tob with the clutch out. It is a metallic spinning sound, and when it gets really bad it sounds like marbles in a can.

Noise only? Or did you feel any jerkiness through the steering wheel? It's generally been my experience that popping noises which occur while turning are due to CV joint problems -- but you often feel the popping through the steering wheel at the same time.
