Hood Damper Kit

Who makes the best hood damper/lift kit? Has anyone ever just made one from parts that you could get at a parts store? I have an EVO 8 and want to do this but I can't believe how much some of them cost and which one is worth the money. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the redline tuning one at $70.

Sure you can make your own kit if you have the skills. but it's really not worth it to save $20.

From what I have read on reviews and such, they all do about the same thing. Some you have to drill your fenders, and some you can use the bolts that are already there. Some dampers are more powerful, which I believe is better than having your hood eventually fall down. Some have better brackets. I have been in the same position as the OP and a lot of the previous companies that made them are discontinued. Hopefully some people chime in will some good reviews on products we can still get.

OK, here's my review.

I have had the redline tuning base kit on my Evo since 2008 and it functions as flawlessly as the day it was installed. It has the perfect lift for both the OEM hood, and my VIS carbon fiber hood (put on the car 2 months ago). Redline even sells a kit with only the hood brackets for people like me that switch hoods.

They also sell replacement struts if one is to ever fail.

I saw on one of the threads that someone just made one, but I'm not sure what he used. I tried to PM him but no reply back. Any ideas on that? I'm thinking struts from like an eclipse hatch. Then just figuring out the mounting.

Did you have to drill the fenders for install?

I have the Prosport damper kit. I really like. No drilling and it has a nice subtle carbon fiber look. Had it on about a year and no complaints.

To be honest, I don't remember. the base doesn't mount to the fenders, it mounts to part of the unibody near the windshield.

I believe it does require drilling, which is no problem what so ever.

Done anyone have the Mynes Performance kit? I was also looking at my F-150 yesterday and I think that I could get some from that and make it work, it has the same setup as the Mynes kit. I would just have to fabricate a bracket for the hood side.

I don't think the Mynes kit is sold anymore. Discontinued last time I checked
