Turbo timers are the biggest scam. I have a Greddy on my 1993 3000GT VR-4 since the day I bought the car 11 years ago. I used it for about the 1st 1,000 miles of the car. My car has 107,000 miles (stock turbos still) now and I have used it for SCCA, Drag Racing, Street Racing and Track racing at Sears Point/Infinion and Thunder Hill.

The reason why I stop using it is because people keep putting my car in 1st gear before shutting the car off. People like jiffy lube, Mitsu service, or velet pariking.

No one will drive their car at boost the whole time. What I do is drive slowly after I get off the exit ramp to my home without boosting. This acts like a turbo timer for me.

Well, I did use my turbo timer this weekend because I did race an WRX STi a stop light before I got to Best Buy.

if you live in a mountain area you can always curb your wheels and leave it in neutral. the convenient thing about a turbo timer is that you can set is or unset it whenever you want for however long you want. so if you got a hott date and you don't wanna sit in yer car for 30 seconds twiddling yer thumbs cuz you passed a couple cars, this is great (cuz you know she gonna be starin' at you funny). and if you got yer warm down phase after work you can just turn the tt off. what you guys SHOULD be worried about is the fact that if you have a turbo timer installed... can someone just break into your car, pull it out, cross the wires and drive away with your car? in addition to turbo timer get: autolock, club, lowjack plus viper alarm with motion sensing and paging . no problems at all!

Nope. The 10/100k powertrain warranty seems to make the TT less important. Clearly Mitsu feels the turbo is adequately cooled via H2O/Oil. Staying out of the turbo for the last mile or so should provide you with an extra safety margin...

How about someone test this with their EVO? Do a 30 minute full blast run and then right after that quickly shut off your engine.

See if anything happens.

I read about the modern turbo cooling system. They said basically as long as you cool it off for a bit, it'll bit ok. Also, in a modern turbo engine, you can't burn your shaft even if you turn it off after it's been running hard. So...

Althogh it's hard to wait in your car when you have to **** real bad and you've been running fairely hard.

turbo timers are bling mods. IF the turbo was just oil cooled i'd probably get one. And its hot as hell around the turbo @ idle too. pretty much the same temp cruising.

Ya know? I dont know about everyone else, but I dont exactly have the money to replace engine parts. However, i don have enough money to install a 100 dollar part that will more than likely help me in the long run. and 'sides, the other thing that ive found is that it works wonders in the winter. I start my car, turn on my heater, pull the key, set the time, walk away, and guess what? I dont have to worry about my car running with the keys in it unlocked. That and it scares the begeezuz out of people. thats the best part.

I had turbo timers in my 2 DSMs and rarely used them since I always like to park in gear. When I got my first turbo timer, I thought it was so cool to walk away from my car while it was still running. I liked how people looked at me weird. But that got old after a while.

The reason why you'd need to let your turbo cool off is because you don't want oil to coke up inside the turbo's center cartridge. Oil coking happens when oil boils and chars. This residue will build up over time inside the turbo. This may be true for older cars with oil only cooled turbos that use conventional oil. This is probably why the turbo timer was conceptualized.

Conventional oils have lower boiling points than synthetics. Modern synthetic oils, such as Mobil1, have higher boiling points. Our cars have water cooling the turbo which also helps. The only time I'd recommend cooling the turbo is after a long highway drive. I'd let the car idle for about a minute before shutting it off. Those with EGT gauges can see what's going on. In city driving, turbo timing for longer than 30 seconds in unnecessary.

good stuff

I put my car in gear too... I really have to... it's a force of habit and I live in GA where everything is a hill.

I've ordered some boost gauge and a/f. They come out to about $100, which is what I wanted.

I like the security of leaving my car in 1st over the weight (1-2lbs), cost and hassle of a TT. I just keep it under 2k for the last 2 min EVERYTIME.

but it's that one time that you can't do it everytime that makes it all worth it hehe. i tend to see things that way, it's the one time for everything, the one time you forget to zip up yer pants, the one time you didn't look over your shoulder, and the one time you really needa go pee so bad you just can't sit there and wiat for 30 seconds longer or that one time you need to number 2 so bad that you can't drive under 2k for the last 2 minutes home.

I dunno, but this just popped up in my mind...where's the water stored for cooling the turbo in this oil+water combination...? Does it ever need to be replaced or leak? I dont get it :O

one line is for oil and the other line with coolant. you have an oil cooler cooler and radiator.

I have an EGT gauge and i know when the turbo is getting hot. 1400F++
what i really need next is to get something to block the heat from my downpipe on the oil pan.

I heard buschur makes a stick on reflective mat that works pretty well. (alot easier then wraping your DP, no chance of cracking it either)

I'm shocked to see how many people don't have one. I think it's a must for any car with a turbo. It save my time and helps the life of my car.
