Easy way to repair front shock mount - Completely free

The front shock mount on VIII and IX doesn't last quite long. I changed 2 before I figured out what was happening with them. It seems that the bearing wears and get loose, but no. It gets loose in it's cage. The bearing itself won't wear because it does not really heat up or spin quickly.

The whole bearing is hold by a pressed metal ring on it. I'm pretty sure this issue exist on all evos.

To tighten the bearing and get rid of the loose, just tap it with an hammer until there is no loose (tap around to bend it even closer to the bearing) Clean with brake cleaner, regrease and install. Done.

I'm done paying for these.
Good luck

First time I hear about this, what are the symptoms when it starts going bad?

On slow speed bumps, you can hear a very annoying clunk coming from it. This is worse when the steering is turned.

Pretty sure most of the time these bearings don't go bad. They just loosen from their housings.

as they age, the rubber also deteriorates. i was surprised to see the differences in shape from my old to new ones.
so, remember to keep an eye on that too.

maybe this is my problem. I expect it could come on suddenly after some sudden and nasty abuse (massive potholes/street flag bases).

it's a very subtle clunking, it's only obvious when I turn the car off and roll it but it's on both sides, as the car rocks back and forth you hear this slight clunking left and right.

in the picture, we are looking at the underside? we must remove it completely to get the hammer on it?

Yeah you do have to remove it to tap the underside. Mysterious loose can also come from end links or ball joints. Jack the car, take the wheel in your hand and try to force it upside down and from side to side, to see if you can feel the loose. If you don't feel any lose doing that, that points to the shock mount (but sometimes the ball joint cannot be feeled that way)
