if its new the dealer can do the flashing they will also set the immobilizer to your key and the correct VIN. if you buy a used one the VIN will be different and depending on which state your in the wont pass the vehicle for inspection. also if its used you need to disable the immobilizer so your key works. next thing you need to worry about is what tune is on that ECU and how it will effect your car safest bet would be to take it to a tuner and have them set everything correctly. hope this helps

So if I buy a used one off ebay or craigslist I will have to take it to the dealer to disable the immobilizer? If I just plug it in it won't start?

if the immobilizer is disabled on the one you get it should start but like I said it really depends on what tune is already on the ECU. IMO I wouldn't trust it

find somebody that can flash the ECU and turn off the immobilizer, or pay the dealer.

Buy the logging/tuning cable, spend 30 minutes reading in the ecuflash subforum and do it all yourself. No need to pay a tuner or dealer. The cable is ~$130 dollars and if you are really on a budget you can find people selling them used in the classifieds on this forum. Getting the ECU working is only the beginning of what you can do with that cable. As an evo owner there is no better bang for your buck mod then that cable and the abilities it grants.
