knocking noise and smoke please help!!!
i drive a 2006 evo 9 mr and when i switch on the engine i hear a hard knocking noise and the engine is vibrating violently and when i did a cold start and let the car run for 5 seconds then switched it off and opened the engine oil fill cover there was smoke coming out. does anyone know what will cause the inside of the engine to smoke when the car was started for 5 seconds only.
the car was low on oil when this happened and i changed the oil.
also when i used to start the car before this happened the clutch pedal would vibrate. and when i get the engine anywhere upove 3k rpm and press clutch to change gear i would hear a grinding noise but the noise never showed up if i shifted at 2k or 2.5k.
do you think its the tranny oil.

Based upon that fact that you are getting the noise when the clutch is disengaged points in the direction that it may be an issue with the throw out bearing, pressure plate,clutch fork or input shaft. The fact that you are missing the rubber plug from the bell housing also raises an eyebrow. I am not too sure why your clutch pedal would be shaking (on a hydraulic system) however this does direct more attention towards the clutch/engine side versus the transmission side.

thanks alot i will be taking it to a mechanic soon cause the knocking seemed to be coming from the top of the engine but i took off the engine cover and the cams and valve springs looked good, do you think something went loose or out of place, also the car hast tephra NLTS and i've used it a couple of times recently do you think that has to do with the issue.
Rod knock sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine. That what I was hoping too when I spun two bearings. I wonder if it could be the thrust bearings/crank walk if the clutch is vibrating.
I might be wrong about this but I feel like smoke always comes out, at least when it's cold. It's probably not smoke but steam from condensation and the like. Again I may be wrong about this.

so the noise was a broken crankshaft and if messed up part of the block that was the grinding noise at shifts, i got a new block with a new crankshaft and bearings. and now moving all the other parts to the new block (pistons, head, etc). expensive job
