Did you verify they didn't steal anything critical to the engine running, the ecu for example, or other engine related parts? Did they damage the wiring harness, trying to bypass an alarm for example?

Did you have the immobilizer reprogrammed / disabled?

Yah but you have to have the new ecu encoded to match the immobilizer module in your car or it wont start, or disable the immobilizer in the ECU.

Well that sucks, the dealership is probably the only one who would be able to look up what your immobilizer code should be by your vin, that is unless you had a backup of your ROM from your old ECU. My suggestion would be to either get with a tuner who can disable the immobilizer and install an alarm ( which you should do anyway after a break in), or buy a Tactrix cable, do some reading and disable it yourself.

My Evo 8 starts and runs with a hardware store key. After about 2 seconds it quits. So, maybe something else is wrong.

Have you verified
Fuel with pressure at the rail?
Spark?

It could be possible that its ecu related. Either immob fault or wrong ecu idk. Jist suggestions.

Also if you had evoscan you can scan it for fault codes and if it is a immobilizer fault it should have a code.
