Getting a 2005 Evo8 ready to sell

Hi guys,

It's with a great sadness that I've decided to get my 2005 Evo8 prepped to sell. It has just under 100k miles on it, basically stock, but I have some major maintenance to do now and on the immediate horizon.

First is the clutch, which is in definite need of immediate replacement. Local dealer quoted me $2700 for parts, labor and Mitu clutch/flywheel package ($1700 labor + $1000 parts). I've found what seem like better options in the $600 range, but since I'm positioning to sell, am I better off going with the factory default?

Both tires and break pads are not ASAP replaces, but are nearing the end of their lives. Both are non-stock but as close to parody of the originals without the high price tags.

So I'm here for some advice. Is it worth replacing the tires and breakpads to command a higher sell price, or leave it to the next tuner to customize to their liking?

I'm also curious what sort of price range I should be looking at. Fair condition, 1 accident on the VIN and some scrapes.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like my car but im not ready to sell it lol. As far as tires go i would leave those alone. As long as brakes have some meat i would let buyer know they are safe but will need replacing soon.

clutch.. ive had an exedy stage 1, felt like stock with great drivability and i got flywheel with it for about 900 dollars. I recently had to replace it (only lasted about 30k miles before atarting to slip). I replaced it with a comp clutch stage 3 and all i did was reaurface flywheel and that ran me about 700. So there are cheaper options than factory.

i would definatlet replace the clutch because you will be able to show them the receipts and i for one would rather buy an evo with a fresh clutch. Just my 2 cents tho.

as far as price, if i were to sell mine (i also have an 05) i would ask at least 15k then negotiate down from there. But ultimately the market will determine price. Some guys here think an 100k mile evo is worth not a penny over 10k, others are willing to pay top dollar for a run down one.

of course this is just my humble opinion, evos are rare. in my area your lucky to find one for sale period.

Is it a clear title? If it's rebuilt/salvage title, that drops the value pretty drastically. As far as putting over $3,000 to do clutch, tires, & brakes, you'd be better off selling as is because you will never recoup that money. Seeing that the car is only in fair condition, needing over $3,000 worth of work off the get go, depending on how well everything else is... engine, transmission, t-case, rear end, etc... I would say if nothing else is needed, you could probably get close to $7,000 for it. It is basically a running/non driving car. Just my .02 worth.

I forgot to add tires, i just bought nitto nt555r stock sized tires for 420 installed myself, woulda been 500 installed at discount. Brake pads front and rear under 200 at several vendors.

Do yourself a favor and do a nation wide search of evos for sale.. any evo you find for 7k or less will not be near stock, will not have anywhere near 100k miles, and probably not have a clean title.

if you spend 3k in parts and labor to get the car in better shape, you will recoup some of that for sure. Its not just a running car, its an evo.

Not sure how this thread got derailed so quickly.

I am a firm believer that if you sell an Evo and the maintenance is up to date it will sell more quickly than an Evo that needs attention. It's common sense.

Brake pads are cheap and can be swapped in easily. I would recommend Stoptech Sport brake pads. A set will run you 124 and the labor to swap them in shouldn't be more than 2 hours.

Good tires can also be had for cheap. A set of Federal 595RS-R Racing would run you about 450ish which would be about 550ish installed and balanced.

The clutch is the biggest expense. If it's slipping badly you should replace it. I would recommend this clutch kit. Evo VIII-IX ACT 2100 Kit w/ Sprung 6-Puck (ME2-HDG6) At $629 it's a good deal for a proven clutch that can hold high horsepower.

I would think labor for clutch install is about $500-600.

If you are looking for an Evo mechanic I would recommend RBMS in hayward. They are much more reasonable in terms of pricing than the dealership and they are an Evo specialist.

Also Hayward Mitsubishi is a reasonable dealership in terms of pricing. Did you go to them for the inital quote?

Hi guys,

Thank you for the replies. Very informative in terms of next steps I need to go through. Notifications weren't getting to me initially.

To answer some questions, I'm the original owner, so no salvaged title, and I went to Oakland Mitsu initially for the clutch quote, and have been for a few years. If they're not giving me a competitive price here, and it sounds like they are not, I'm perfectly willing to go to Hayward to get this all fixed.

@deylag, do you have a particular contact at RBMS? If they're the type of place to take care of this in one fell swoop, I'd like to use them for everything.

Last question: do you guys have a suggest place to market my Evo once the installation work is done?

Thanks!

Yea Oakland Mitsu has a reputation of giving insane price quotes on labor and parts.

Last time I checked Mert Solis the owner is the main contact for all the customers. They will be able to do everything for you.

$1700 in labor to do a clutch? They're stoned. It pays 10hrs on all data, and it takes 4. Most anyone should charge on it is $1k. Find a different shop. Also, you can get an OEM replacement Exedy clutch for like $450. Exedy makes the factory mitsu clutch. here: https://www.rallysportdirect.com/par...ent-clutch-kit

From a personal perspective, I don't care when I see in an ad that a used car has "brand new" tires and brakes. It generally means the cheapest **** available was thrown on so they could put some buzz words in the ad. I also prefer to make my own selections for brakes and tires.

If you're selling it, I would recommend replacing the clutch with a factory one and go ahead and replace the tires & brakes as those are just points for people to Jew you down on price. Most people prefer cars that are stock so they haven't been beaten on even though that may not be the case.

I have a very similar situation. I have a near stock (mostly cosmetic mods) ’05 VIII but with low miles, only 59K. I replaced the rotors last year with Brembo drilled rotors and the timing belt this year. It has run flawlessly for 12 year. After I posted it for sale the damn 3 ACD lights came on. I’ve pretty much made up my mind to have the pump replaced because I don’t want to go thought all the negotiations the OP was concerned about. And I am confident I can recoup the cost. What do you guys think?

And WilsonEvo, what did you decide to do?

i agree, i know i bought my evo because i wanted an evo, but the fact that it was bone stock when i bought it with no issues made me jump on it asap.

The fact is that clean evos are hard to come by, doesnt really matter what argument a buyer can tell you, just tell them to call you back after they look at all the other evos on the market. Its a sellers market for evos. I wouldnt ask for a huge dollar amount, but i wouldnt give it away either.

I think you mean "parity". A "parody" of the stock tires would be interesting
