evo 9 with 4.3 final drive
evo 9 with 4.3 final drive
Does anyone using evo 9 first gear with mfactory 4.3 final drive. Isn't 1st gear going to be too long? I have evo 9 1st gear and evo 8 rest gears and I am wondering if 4.3 final drive will make first gear too long or just fine. To my calculation says it will be exactly same long as like evo 8 1st gear with 4.11 final drive. Thanks!

The taller final drives are fine if you have a stroker motor, or have a drag car that needs to be able to go 150+ in 4th. Otherwise, keep the stock FD.
Also, a few of us (including me) have experience the Factory FD being noisy.

Thanks a lot for response. It is 2.0L motor. I will do evo 9 first gear and keep the stock FD. I heard from a lot of people that Mfactory FD are noisy which I think will bother me a little. I was trying to have little longer gears because I am spinning tires on 1st and 2nd but I can always get some semi slick tires to calm it down a little. Thanks !!!

Longer gearing with power is less drama /wheelhop etc. A better or smoother application of the power. A few examples would be most liter bikes after 2003 had 80-110mph first gears. Or super cars with 60-80mph first gears.
An good example would be the sequential evo. Its geared for 75mph in first. Its on a 245 drag radial but you can brake boost at 40mph/5000 rpm and it just rips . It doesn't dance around or wheelhop and brake parts. 4.0 60-130mph runs on crappy asphalt or the drag strip.
Of course, if you had a sticky tire, a slipper clutch and ideal conditions a shorter gear will accelerate harder then a longer one.
That is exactly how I felt when I ran 4.11's in my 2.4L IX RS 13 years ago. With 480 lb/ft I didn't really need more torque multiplication.
One of the best additions I had installed in that car.
I have the Evo 9 MR with a six speed and the stronger 6 speed gearset with the tallest final drive. I really like the few hundred rpm lower cruising speed I get going 75mph. I have no problems with 1st gear being too long, but the biggest thing I notice is on a road with say a speed limit of 40mph.
If the speedlimit is 40mph, with the stock 6 speed I would typically just cruise around going about 45mph in 6th. Now I use 5th gear until I can get going about 50mph or so, then I will use 6th. I have no problem getting away in 1st.
