Evo 8 or C5Z for spare toy

Evo 8 is a 2003 with 65k miles that's extremely clean. Car has cams and adjustable gears, stock turbo, ID1050x on 93 with a 255lph, with other small bolt-ons making 390/370whp on 24psi for $25,500

C5Z is a 2004 with 51k miles that's extremely clean and stock besides tires and a shifter for $23,000

Looking for a weekend toy to take to car shows and cars and coffee while spirited drives are common on my back roads. Have always loved Evo's and STI's

I've had 300-1000whp cars from C6Z - 03/04 Cobras - Audi B5 S4 - etc so I have experience. Currently have a 2006 6k mile stock Z06 as well that is a garage queen.

Any insight is appreciated. Will also occasionally take the car to do HPDE events

The Evo details make me curious a bit about the motor mods. No doubt the engine has seen numerous mods (exhaust mani / speed density / cam cover vented / motor mounts / anti-roll engine damper / battery relocation / VTA blow off valve / FPR on the fire wall). Looks like he painted the radiator overflow reservoir?=(

Maybe he removed the larger turbo because this 4g63 looks like it was pushing some WHP based on the exterior mods. You just got to know what youre getting into w/the Evo & understand a heavy hand appears to have been into it! But, it looks clean & well sorted!

The C5, like you mentioned, maybe truly stock

Thanks for the reply and insight on possibilities.

He claims he replaced the manifold because it was ugly and rusty (not uncommon) and at the same time had the timing components done (65k miles) as well as the rod and main bearings replaced. The bearings seemed odd but my buddy said it's not super uncommon for it to have been done on an Evo as an maintenance item or upgrade.

He painted several items including the wheelwheel for aesthetics (the car has 0 rust anywhere but annoying it's painted over). Current owner has had if going on 8 years and put 8k miles on it give or take

Replaced main and rod bearings for "maintenance" on stock internals? Big red flag

I have to say since you state you've always been interested in evos and sti's, is this because of a rally inspiration? Because the two cars could not be more different, not getting into an "evo vs sti" topic here because that's been played out and I have no idea why they've been compared all these years. Its like how tomatoes are all seen as vegetable when really they're fruits. Owning either car are completely separate experiences, from working on them (sti being boxer/tunnel trans, evo being inline 4/trans/tcase) to the driving experience. The only thing they have in common is seriously the fact that they're 4 door awd, they even look completely different. Just saying this incase you've driven/owned either hoping they'll be something like the other.

Thanks for the reply. Thankfully it's from the fundamentals of an AWD Turbo Manual car. Not that they're the same experience in working on, just more of the platform fundamentals they bring to the table

Since you already have a stock C6, unless you just want to collect vettes, I don't know why you'd want a C5 as well. Definitely get an Evo 8/9 over an sti. Not sure the one you pictured is the right one or not... Hard to say from a few pictures but I've seen much worse ones lol...

Since you already own a corvette I would say Evo, but personally I don't like this one. I would be wary of buying an Evo that has parts relocated (battery) and/or has had any part of the engine tampered with (cams). The stickers and colored bumper release also scare me.

Both of the things you listed are pretty easy/common to do (cams and battery relocation). Main and rod bearings are much more sketchy since to do it right requires a full tear down IMO, and then why not upgrade pistons/rods etc. weird.

I would also choose the Evo8, but not this Evo8
If that car is not garaged, that VC breather would be a red flag for me

just factor in a fresh engine. a number of things may need upgrading if you plan to track it. but I would say its worth it. I mean we all spent that money already People dont normally gawk at stock evos

Z06 if I planned on doing a lot of serious HPDE. For everything else I'd have more fun in the Evo.
that's just me.
