Black Stuff on floor?!

There is think black stuff on my garage floor. Its not oil, or any kind of fluid. Its much thinker, almost like a paint. But it seems to be happening more recent, has anyone noticed this problem with your car?

Where on the car does it seem to be coming from (front, rear, left, right, center)?

Where do you live? Is it really friggin hot, especially in your closed up garage? If so my guess would be that your undercoating is melting. I used to have VWs that this would happen on. In fact you used to see many older A2 & A3 chassis VWs running around with black drips where the undercoating would weep out of the doors and on to the rocker panels.

My first guess would be leaking gear lube from the transfer case or front diff (which is much thicker heavier than motor oil), but that'd be further forward.

smell it, or scrape some off and take it to a friend who knows or a mechanic and have them smell it. that should give you a good idea.

Just to clarify - is it like dryed paint or paint in a can?

does it look and feel like thick black grease? its probably very hot over there... evos come with an underbody "grease" to protect the bottom.... not sure exactly wat it is but others will fill you on in that. basically when it gets very hot, it may drip off.

Yes, it's probably the undercoating. I have the same stuff on my garage floor now that it's hot out. It's pure black driplets right in the middle under the car. Nothing to worry about. I inspect my car alot and it's not fluids. My other car also drips undercoating from the wheel wells.

I just pulled my car back and checked it. It's sticky grease-like just like the undercoating, not drivetrain fluid at all.

^Ditto....having the same thing happen with mine. I just got my oil changed a couple of days ago and had them check it out when it was up on the rack. It's only undercoating. Kinda a tarry, black, goopy stuff. Makes one hell of a mess that's for sure. No worries...
