Evo clutch isn't that bad....

1 Autocross
10 Drag strip nights (est. 3 runs per night)
numerous street activities
38.5k miles
330+ awhp.

Just started slipping last night.

the cooler weather is probably helping a lot of clutches go south, with the extra torque the cars are making due to the cold air outside.

I've got 41k on my stock clutch, similar hp/tq. as you without the track events, and it's still holding. Agreed, the stock clutch isn't that bad.

I came from a rear wheel drive torque monster though, so I might be a little easier out of the box then others =)

DragNRacing Nov 26, 2005 08:22 AM

Mine wasn't bad until my throwout bearing cracked in half at 5K miles

How expensive did that get?

EVOJACK55 Nov 26, 2005 05:43 PM

ya i have heard that the clutches can hold out for a long time, as long as you know what you are doing... i remember going into the parts dept, long before i thought about upgrading to an evo, and the guy was telling me that people are coming in replacing their clutchs in 3k of the car being driven off the lot... either hes full of it, or those people were

4TUN8 Nov 26, 2005 05:49 PM

Oh no, he's not full of it. If you rev it up and step off the pedal it's going to kill it. The problem is where most cars you rev it up, step off the clutch, the tires smoke and you burn out. This car just grabs because of the AWD, and I don't think people are used to that.

03 evo
33k miles
Over 80 autox runs w/ semi agressive launches and the clutch still feels strong

i have had my evo for a month and it just hit 27k and i had to trailer it the dealer because the clutch burt up so bad the car wouldnt move while in gear... i have heard many ppl complain about the clutches....?

kf6ytc Nov 26, 2005 06:16 PM

i hope mine lasts 30k + :)

Pictures from an Evo in Virginia Beach.

This clutch was taken out after 2400 miles. The owner thought that he could take it to the track and do 5000 RPM clutch drops and then have it warrantied.

Disk and flywheel

Pressure plate

Total carnage

I guess he had to learn the hard way. Treat these cars good and the clutch will last you a long time.

I'm another stock clutcher with 31k miles, numerous autocrosses.

The TOB was covered under warranty. I opted to go with the Exedy twin disc while the TOB was being replaced and forego my warranty and any possible issues I may have with the stock clutch.

People forget that the AWD drivetrain puts more stress on the clutch than a front/rear wheel drivetrain.
