Evo III Importing Scam?

I was looking through another Evo forum, and found a classified ad for 2 imported Evo III's. I emailed the gentleman and asked him if the cars would be street legal, and he emailed me back saying yes, they would have a florida title. I have done the research on here, and it seems that its impossible to do that. Here are the pictures. Any thoughts?

The reason I posted this is because the guy says that they are both highly modified, and the yellow one will outrun the R33 Skyline that he raced against. He also says they only have the equivalent of about 50,000 US miles, and he is offereing them for sale very cheap ($11,000) each.

tell him to send in a pic with the resent newspaper front page and him holding it right beside the car then ask him to take the another pic with the newspaper right inside the engine bay. at least you will know that it was taken in the us and you'll see if hes f$cking with you.

If it is too good to be true, it probably is. That white one is hot though

Oh yea the cars are awesome, I am just curious as to how he could get away with this, and if it were possible, and the car was bought, could he be sued for damages and such?

Oh don't worry Savage, I am a big fan of road trips (and I love Florida). I would just go see him if I planned on buying one, then I could get all the **** straight right from the get go.

you should also be able to get a copy of the japanese title degistration paperwork for these cars. If the car has left Japan, it will no longer have the shakenshomei (title) but should have paperwork for registration outside of japan.

You may also want to have a closer look at the cars - for those prices they may very well have been wrecked.

advise extreme caution.

Please let us know what you find out, tho. Very interesting.

one more thing - I am curious how they got the yellow one out of Japan without turning in the plates. That car was/is registered to the Chiba Narashino district. As far as I know all plates must be returned to the Land Transportation Offices when junked, exported, or otherwise rendered deregistered.

I asked whether they had been wrecked when I emailed the guy. I may just up and drive down to florida over christmas break just for the hell of it to see these cars. IF they turn out to be legit (highly doubt it) then I would pick one up. Shouldn't he be able to supply me a VIN # if the car has been successfully registered and givne a florida title?

hashiriya Dec 8, 2005 07:31 AM

he should be able to give you a VIN regardless - and the florida registration, if completed.
Wouldnt these two cars also require homologation to US standards? They are what - '95 models, right?

Sounds too good to be true, good luck to ya, hope the trip won't be a lost cause.

Crackerballer Dec 8, 2005 07:44 AM

I believe they are 95 Models, and yes I figured they would have to meet US EPA standards and such, as well as crash data. The only thing I can figure is maybe he is buying wrecked evo 8's or Galants (which I have read other people doing) and finding a way to register the car under that VIN, or like installing the VIN onto the car.

Play along with him - ask him how he wants payment. If he says western union - its a scam :)

I would love to have a car that weights 2800lbs and making 500awhp!

The yellows hood kinda looks bent a lil lol

I willing to be these car appear as salvage titles and will be reported as Mitsubishi Mirages. Just a hunch, thats how a V that is stateside is listed. Vin swapping can be risky business, read up to find out more.
