B & J's EVO IX Dec 24, 2005 01:59 AM

EVO IX's

Just curious as to how many people out there have the EVO IX's and what they think of the performance and what you dont like about it?

My fiance and I just bought one the day after thanksgiving and we love it. This is her first high performace sports car and this is my first awd. I had a 99 gst for my last car and there is no comparison. So me and her are new to the awd scene, but the only thing that im a little dissapointed in is the lauching of the vehicle, but other than that this is one bad beast.

dissapointed with the launching of the vehicle? Not sure how many miles you have on the car, or wether or not you should be doing it.. if you're not comfortable with it but.. have you had it around 4,500-5,000 (5,500 limit) and let out the clutch, slipping it ever so slightly, just enough to grip and avoid wheel hop?

Launching shouldn't be a dissapointment, or atleast shouldn't be the cars fault ;)

I love my IX...just picked it up yesterday. Can't wait to I get it nice and broken in.

If the launch doesn't jerk your head to the back of the seat you're not doing it right.

Having owned a highly modded 04 RS I can honestly say that the IX is much more of a pleasure to drive. I miss some of the "brutality" that was the acceleration response on the 04, but I had invested about $8000 to achieve it. Also the car had lost some of it's driveablity. The IX has a much more linear power delivery stock than it's predecessors, thanks to MIVEC so there's not as much of a turbo "rush" as before. Finally, with the results I've been reading about with very minimal mods, the car has incredible potential. I'm definitely going to be a bit more conservative in modding this one so as not to fall into the same situation that I did with the RS. Probably exhaust, drop in filter and a good solid flash and the car should be everything that I could possibly want.

Hey those are my future mods! I wonder how many other people who have overmodified their previous cars are going this route? Then again, it always starts that insidiously and before you know it you find yourself under the car dropping the block to put in forged pistons... and you have no idea how you got there!

There is a way to unplug the rev limiter on launches, this has been discussed on this site many times and can be found by searching or asking warrtalon, he can give great detail on how to do this. I think a sticky should be created detailing on how to do this for new EVO owners, but I'm afraid Mitsubishi may read and realize what people are doing and make it harder to do this in future EVO models.

for the street, you don't need to disconnect the launch control. you can spin the wheels if you drop the clutch (quickly) above ~4500 rpms.

Dissapointed with the launch thats strange. First time i took my ix to the track i ran a 12.9@106.6 i wasnt dissapointed that is for sure.

DrSmile,

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I think the lesson learned will stick this time though.....

(keeping fingers crossed......)

my ix feels a lot stronger than my VIII. The engine also sounds a lot more refined...

i was reading in Super Street that the IX uses a 2-piece ring and stronger pistons this time around. So it sounds like the bottom end is changed a little for the better. At any rate, its not even eating any oil during the breakin as the VIII did.
