Wheel balancing...nice F'ing weights they hammered on the rim!!!

Apparently it would have cost an extra $.05 to static weight the wheels.???

I would assume there will be a big fat mark on our outer rim where that 1970's weight is hammered on.?

5cents times thousands and thousands of cars is usually enough reason to use standard wheel weights at the factory. Sux huh? {thumbdwn}

HobieKopek Mar 25, 2003 12:35 PM

Yeah, welcome to the world of automotive corner-cutting. :rolleyes: It could be worse though. Still, with a car like that you'd kinda expect them to spring the extra few thousand total. ($0.05 * 4 wheels per car) * 25,000 cars worldwide (let's just assume there's 25k Evos total) = a whopping $5,000 saved. Awesome. :lol: They woulda done better taking the lighters out of the 12v power supplies. ;)

Another weight saving idea for all the non smokers ;) :D

look on your nice pretty alloy wheel....you will see a big fat ugly chunk of iron (or some kind of metal) hammered onto the lip of the wheel to balance it. Underneath that hammered on chunk of metal is a big scratch from where they hammered it on.

The smart thing is to use the sticky weights that go on the inside of the wheel (backside). out of site and no big blemishes to the pretty wheels.

Actually considering the tuning done to the suspension, I would think that the hammer on weights, and the ability to get a good balance using them, outweighed the appearance of tape weights, which do fall off frequently, and are fairly difficult to get a perfect balance with.

most smokers carry lighters anyways.

Great point. Static balance is not the greatest thing ever. They come off extremely easily, and they dont provide a "true" balance.

Every new car I have purchased have come with hammered on weights, and every one I have changed over to tape. Never have a problem with tape, so long as the tire place takes the time to clean the rim surface well before applying them.

Yeah, I got lucky with mine. I was washing my car this weekend and I notice a slight blem on the wheel rim. At first I thought WTF, I am going to ream the dealership for putting a slight scape on my rim. As I sat looking at it I realized that the slight scuff was from the initial,install of the wheel weight. It obviously had to be re-located and left a nice scuff in its original location. Arrrgggg! Its noit really that noticeable but it is to me now!This stuff does piss me off!!!!

The factory is responsible for installing the wheels/tires not the dealership.
