So what's the deal with the cams in the new IX's???

Heyy...Ive heard different things about the cams in the new IX's. I read one particular thread that made me wonder whats up with them but I cant find it :(. It essentially stated that because of MIVEC, it will be very hard to replace the cams and get gains. It said that that is why the IX's are putting more power out than the VIII's (besides the new nice awesome turbo of course :) ). Its like they already have aftermarket cams. It also stated that aftermarket cams may not be able to be used in conjunction with the MIVEC! I find that hard to believe though...

So whats the scoop with cams and the future of the new IX's with in conjunction with the MIVEC!?

Thanks!!!

There is no scoop. HKS and others are working on new sets of cams for the IX as we speak. Also, a few people are testing what happens when you replace JUST the exhaust cam. Time will tell...

Are the specs the same between the VIII and IX?

Interesting..

I believe HKS and other companies are in the process of making new cams due to the MIVEC, also a difference between the VIII and IX cams are the IX cams are hollow.

Can anyone confirm that the lift/duration is the same as the VIII?

Huh? What do you mean? We knows the cams are NOT the same, although the exact cam itself MAY be the same (have seen no reports to confirm nor deny). That's why I said they are making new ones. The MIVEC head and intake cam have caused the need for making new ones.

As far as I have been made to understand (maybe misguidedly), the cam specs for the IX's are the same as the VIII's in terms of lift, duration, lobe profiles, etc. The only major difference is that the MIVEC allows the engine to adjust the intake cam timing independently of the exhaust cam in real time.

I THINK the only difference you would be able to see between an VIII intake cam and a IX intake cam is how the cam gears are attached to it. Otherwise, it should have the same specs.

That is what I was refering too.

Wonder if MIVEC would allow for an aggressive set of cams that could be made to idle like stock? Maybe use MIVEC to reduce some overlap in an effort to get more vaccum at idle.

Cams can already be made to idle like stock on the VIIIs with tuning, so it should be doable on the IXs.

Are you sure? I've got some panflit from Mitsu about the IX and it says they save -2.2 lbs from hollow cams as if they wern't hollow before.

No, they were hollow in the VIII. I remember my friend talking about it before the IX even existed. I have the same brochure, and it's just showing that along with other things to show where they cut weight vs. a normal kind of car.

Absolutely hollow; VIII.

Just a little more hollow on the IX
