Who has played around when it's wet outside?
Well for the past couple days it's been sleeting/ raining off and on which makes the streets constantly wet but not as slippery as snow. I'm still on my stock Advans but I decided test out the car and have some fun. I didn't want to go crazy but I wanted to see if I can break it loose slightly by htting a corner hard. When I approached a 90 degree corner such as a left turn I would give it full throttle right when I started to turn the car and the back end would kick out slightly and then I'd regain control. Does anyone else do this? I've had a couple good ones but I was pretty sloppy at one when I let of the gas and the car bogged really quickly while I was in first. It's kinda scary because i'm used to my fwd tsi but I have the feeling I should just stay on the gas the whole time and not let off. I'm just paranoid i'm going to actually go sideways or spin out completely. When I do it the back end kicks out at a 45 degree angle and when I let off i have to countersteer really quickly because the car immediately wants to swing the other way. Is there any damage this can do? I figured if I own an evo I should let it have a bit of fun here and there besides to going to and from work and sititng in a garage all day long.

Have fun man but be careful. The best thing to do is drift like that around medians. Also, let your Advans get really bald and then go to an empty parking lot and have fun!

I, also, went from a front wheel drive vehicle to the evo and i can say that i have had my share of fun in the snow and wet weather. My car will spin all four if it is cold and i am laying into it through first...fun, but bad on the tires since they aren't cheap and unlike a FWD you don't just wear two you wear all four. The streets out here in STL get slippery as hell when it is wet so i can keep a nice solid slide through first and second. Be careful though, when it grips, it grips hard and goes where ever the front is pointing.

If you set the ACD to gravel you will have more control but not as much fun.

O.K. slideing around any turn in the rain is bad, also taking off from a light fast and turning the wheel not cool, at least when it happens on accident. Spinning in one spot and destroying the tires is crazy fun! I went to a H.S. parking lot maybe 5 times in one night, most fun ever

I'd get the back end to kick out but that's it. I been told repeatedly that as much as you want to get off the gas that you should stay on it and the computer will compensate for the rest. I left it on gravel all day long.

Hey Wizzo 8 i'm from Hoffman Estates too. I just moved into the area less than a year ago. Where you located near? I too have a an Electric Blue 05. You weren't driving down Gold Rd. today around 2:30 were you? I saw one pass me in the opposite direction when I was coming back from my office.

Letting off the gas middrift to regain control makes you go extremely out of control..This car loves to snap. I learned to NEVER let off the throttle durring a powerslide. I came from a RWD & FWD. The Evo is the first AWD i've had, and it's completely different than both.

It's good to play around with the limits when the conditions and environment allow it. You can learn how to better control your car in the event of a loss of traction. Just use your head and don't take any risks or cause problems.
The AWD by nature tends to keep things easily controllable by the driver. There doesn't have to be a lot of computer interaction, and in fact there isn't much during acceleration on the Evo. When the back end begins to spin up and step out, the center diff tightens up and more of the drive is diverted to the front tires. As long as you have the wheel pointed in the proper direction, the front tires will pull the front of the car back in line and it'll never get TOO sideways. You can really nail the gas and make all 4 tires spin up and lose grip, at which point the car will be very hard to control, but all you have to do is back off the throttle enough to let at least one tire stop spinning and start controlling the direction of the car. If you let off the gas while the rear is stepping out, there is no forward pull by the front tires, and in fact they will be pushing back, most likely in the wrong direction if you are counter-steering, and this can cause the car to spin out before the rear tires get a chance to hook up again. This also holds true for FWD cars. If you are braking and the backend starts to step out, the Electronic Braking Distribution will help rotate the car somewhat and keep it a little more controllable than letting off the gas and brakes, but still not as controllable as giving it a little gas while sliding. That's what I've gathered from playing around in my cars. Your mileage may vary. ;) |
I play saftly every chance I can when it wet out. I even competed in a snowy icey half wet autocross a few weeks back in Milwaukee. Doing it on city street can be expensive on wheels. I have seen a few get muched by others, but if you do it safely, its a blast. find a nice open area and learn how the car responds. This is crucial, you will be suprised.
my first time with my new car in snow, honestly was disappointing. reason, i was hammering the gas, and the car was really loose and out of control, kind of asking me WTF are you doing dude? then I talked to a few people, and the only thing I would recommend is, when in doubt, dont floor it, dont suddenly lift, dont counter steer, just point the car in the direction you want to go and give a LITTLE gas and it will go there. |
I don't understand why people act like doing this is such a horrible thing. This is what the car is meant to do. It's actually meant to do an array of things but when the engineers incorporated the ACD in 05 they did this for a reason. Yeah I admit there are alot of dumbasses out there who beat the living crap out of there evo's while dumping the clutch, power shifting, etc. But &*(damn the car is meant to slide a bit at times.
