Maybe I'm paranoid

I was wondering if anyone has heard of any damage being caused by a short ram intake but with the vent sheild removed.
My sheild has been off the car for a while now and nothing has happened but it does make me a little nervous in the rain and after I wash the car but I'm pretty sure if it is sucking in any water it shouldnt be enough to do anything.
Anyone hear of anyone causing any damage like this?

I would just remove the intake unless your tuned for it, its useless

The stock intake is good to atleast 400hp, keep that in the car.

Theibault Oct 10, 2006 11:14 AM

Never had one, so I cannot answer your question. I atleast didnt tell you it's useless and to remove it. ;)

I just figured if he is worried about damaging his engine at the expense of an intake then why not just remove it. I think as long as the filter is not in direct contact with a good amount of water then you should be fine. I wouldn't hold the hose over the vent while washing it though. At least i didn't tell you that i have never had one and that i can't help you. :D

You mean, you took off the hood vent and am worried about sucking water in the open-element filter, right?

Yea also I live in Arizona where it almost never rains.. But yesterday when I was washing my car I was wondering about it the whole time... somehow it had never occured to me before

You would really need to pretty much submerse your intake to cause any damage. But like someone else said, DITCH THE INTAKE! It's pointless for our car the way it sits. I had a K&N Typhoon intake installed and it was making me lose a TON of power seriously. When I put my stock box back on and added a K&N drop in filter I gained my power back!

Weird I dont think I have seen anyone lose power from an intake as long as its tuned..
More or less what I want to know is how much water does it take to hydro-lock a motor?

More than your intake will see. I still think the stock airbox will give you better power, the intake is probably sucking up all the hot air from under the hood, whereas the stock air box utilizes cooler air from out side of the engine bay.

Like I just stated above, you would need to have part or all of your intake submersed in water to cause any damage. Drops here and there won't hurt anything.

I know by experience its takes about a quart of water....... the water from a car wash or the rain wont do any damage.... in fact it might actually give you power by cooling off intake temps a bit. but thats just a hypothetically speeking.

Thank you. finally a solid answer
I have actually thought the same thing about the small amounts of water because moist air is more dense so it could help
