who said a little mud can't hurt...
 

Yesterday, i took the Evo out for a little rallying, and she got a bit dirty... Today whilst changing gears i noticed that the turbo's engagement (during 4k'ish) lagged/hesitation for a second or two... it's hard to explain, but this is not the usual turbo lag, but something that made me go "huh?"...

I open the engine bay and notice this...

I think the mud either is blocking the intake, or something that would cause this hesitation..

Since i have never cleaned my engine before, i have no idea how to wash it, or what would damage what somehow...

Any recommendations?

There is a point and time when you find you have to much money. Treating a 30K car like that shoes you have to much. ;) I'm sure it's a blast, I remember doing that in my talons but that will not happen for a very long time in the Evo.

If you had your plastic panel on under your car that would have also stopped that from happening.

:) I do have my plastic underpanel.. and yet it still just sprayed right up in there..

I would clean the intake and take a peek at your MAF sensor..

lol wow, never mind then. Did you sink it? Either that or you must have really been showing that mud who's boss.

Get a garden hose and go crazy!! ;) Just don't soak certain areas near a sensor or plug. And btw, is that a Typhoon intake? maybe that's where your problems lie. :lol:

looks like you was doing it with your hood open. how could you see where you was going? that would be my 1st guess but i dont man. looks like you need to clean that. and i got just the idea for you. since you can go rallying with your hood open why dont you go to a car wash and open you hood and go thru the car wash. should take care of this problem you have. other then the new problems your making for your self id say your good to go.

Let it sit and then spray the hell out of it. As for your problem, i dunno

Your descriptioon is pretty vague but I can almost garuntee that it is your MAF sensor. a "lag" when giving it gas is a good sign but a better description could help identify the problem. Do a search about cleaning the MAF. Just need to be really sure that the cleaner is non corrosive to plastic and rubbers. There is even a spray made specifically for this.

Get a steam engine cleaner from your local autozone and carefully clean the bay. Make sure you take your intake out completely and see if any mud got in there. Clean you MAF being careful with the little wiring and sensors with a q-tip. Also see if any mud got inside the turbo. It will weigh down the wheel. You may have to clean that with a qtip as well. I learned how hard it is to get the mud out from underneath the vehicle when I took my 05 evo out off roading in the rain. It sure was fun at the time but the next few days was spent scooping out bricks of mud from all the nooks and spraying down the whole bottom of the car. Even months later I can still hear mud falling down when I'd hit bumps in the road. I, however, did not have an aftermarket air intake. That would've been pretty dumb of me to not think of what could happen with an exposed intake. ;)

Here's what you do:

1. Go to a do-it-yourself carwash place with a pressure washer.
2. BEFORE you start spraying down the engine cover these items in plastic trash bags and either tape the plastic bags down or zip tie 'em.
A. Battery, especially the terminals.
B. Air Intake, VERY important! Make sure water cannot get to it.
C. Fuse box
D. Brake reservoir
3. Make sure you place plastic around the top of the oil dipstick and tape that down.
4. Spray the hell out of the engine til it's clean.

I'm probably forgetting something so someone please chime in if I did.
