Evo's real HP...

i hear that the u.s. evo is really over 300+ hp. they say 271 for insurance purposes. and my friend told me that the sti is really 290-296 hp? is that true?

mrdecibel Jun 12, 2003 10:47 AM

No

AustinEvo8 Jun 12, 2003 10:48 AM

No

wmcorcor Jun 12, 2003 10:49 AM

Nope ...check out the Dyno results people are seeing. After the Mazda and Ford problems with this I'm sure they are being very careful to be accurate. Imagine the lawsuits from the insurance companies or the first dude that wipes it out and claims he woud have been ok if it was only 271 HP.

I'd like to think it is really 300 but it's not.

ImportPePe Jun 12, 2003 11:21 AM

Wait, didn't the Evo make about 240-250hp to the wheels?

boostedwrx Jun 12, 2003 11:28 AM

maybe on the car and driver dyno, whatever that is. But on Shivs dyno it made 180 or so. While the stock STi is making 220whp on the same dyno.

sucks..

drmosh Jun 12, 2003 11:29 AM

Yeah man, US evo actually makes 491 horsepower AT THE WHEELS!! And it comes with nitrous FROM THE FACTORY!!
And it drives circles around the STi literally.

180 on shivs dyno is 225 on most all wheel drive dyno's. Don't forget that Shiv's 180 was with 91 octane as well ... 93 octane = additional 10hp.

EVO SPECIALIST Jun 12, 2003 03:02 PM

The accual HP is 271- all the dyno test done are with multible runs like car and driver dyno the evo 7 times with all diferent results,1 was at 298.2 another at 196 another at 250 and the last at 320.to dyno a AWD s not easy, and not everyone knows how to do it corectly.I watched 3 runs on a professional dyno in CO.all the runs were right @ 271-273 and it was a dyno specificaly for AWD performance cars.:headbang: :mitsu:

actually maybe he was talking about the EVO 8 gsr. I hear that has about 320 at the flywheel. Maybe thats what he means but you can only import those from japan so its not easy to get a hold of. Im not sure what gives it that extra 50

Shiv's dyno is the Dyno Dynamics, pretty fairly commonly used in Australia, but rarely used in the USA. Dyno Dynamics tend to read hp ratings lower than other dynos. The most commonly used dyno in the US, the Dynojet, read around 240-250 at the wheels, which, when you use AWD drivetrain losses into account, it is well over the 271hp rating Mitsubishi has said. Besides, there's no way a 3260lb vehicle with 271hp can do low to mid 13's, can it? It has to be underrated.

my thoughts exactly. the m3 has 333hp at the crank, so that's about 260+ whp. so how can an evo with only 271hp reach almost the same 0-60 and 1/4 mile time of an m3? is it because of the AWD or the possibility of it being underrated?

Kazoo's1st Evo8 Jun 12, 2003 05:43 PM

isnt an m3 heavier

J!m Jun 12, 2003 05:54 PM

E46 M3 is MUCH heavier than an EVO.

JRW160 Jun 12, 2003 06:05 PM

I think it is under rated actually. I saw a couple of dynos that were aroun 230 at the wheels. That means there is only a ~15% drivetrain loss. I think an all wheel drive car should lose a little more than 15% through the drivetrain. I am no expert though, that is just my opinion.
