How much power do you think I'm loosing?
 

Hi I live in Denver (altitude 5280ft) and have 91 octane gas.
How much power do you think I'm running on the evo?
230, 240 at the crankshaft?

The reason why I asked is that I tried to do a 0 to 60 for the first time. THere were 2 of us in the car and my friend was taking the time with a cell phone stop watch thing. Anyway both of us tried and we were both right aroun 7 seconds. Kind of sucks. I am worried and thinking of bringing the car to the dyno next weekend.

That does seem a little long. I know nothing about performance at altitude but even a bad launch should give low 14 sec times. Those times will give you a 15 sec quarter.

How long have you had the car. They instruct you at the dealership not to redline it till youv had about 500 miles or so on it. So you dont want to wreck the engine...but ya, even still...that seems rather low, but they streesed the "wearing in" factor at the dealership.. so i guess you just gotta drive it like a granny for awhile.. or pay for the 200 dollar dyno. Pick your poison..hehe

Got 3000 miles on it
I didn't go over 5000 for the first 600 miles
changed the oil at 1000.
Anyway. I thought that with 3 people in the car I would lose about .5 seconds
Altitude about another .5 sec
The gas is a big factor. The Peak HP with 91 gas is at 5500 RPM instead of 6500. So after 5500 it really tapers off. When you shift into second you are already at 5000 so you only get big boost for about 500 rpms. I can't really quantify it but I bet you that 91 octane gas affects this engine majorly. mybe .7 seconds. put in my beeing new at this another .5 seconds and we are in the spec range. But maybe it's just me justifying this as an exuse.

Anyway. Tried my friend 97 porsche 911 carrera S modified (exahust, chip, intake) and he did in the high 6's low 7's too. I'm not as worried anymore, but I would like to hear everyones imput on this.

I estimate about 10% loss HP for the altitued and somebody else said you loose about 10hp with 91 gas beside messing up the curve. This adds up to about 40 hp loss. This brings the car to 230 Hp. With that the time seems almost reasonable.

It's funny with the powercurve being messed up you can get same or better times by shifting in 3rd gear. So 1st to 6200 RPM, then 2nd to the same then 3rd.

91 Octane? Do you live in a third world country??

What are u talkin' about? California is ALL 91 Octane ... 3rd world country? :lol: Heeeeeeeeelllo. Haven't traveled overseas I assume :dunno:

U.S. Gas is calculated R+M/2. If you are thinking 91 RON, it's not the same.

high altitude will KILL your horsepower. I live in Edmonton near BC, and when I go up to Jasper to check the mountains I swear the car has 40% power loss to the altitude. :P

In Canada they even have 94 octane!

In Europe it is 95 and 98. Sometimes (Shell) 99 and 100!

But 91 in an Evo??

So, what would it be in RON?

In Germany it is also RON.

91 RON as the best you can get is pretty amazing. Even in easter European countries you get higher rated gas.

But the US is a bit of a developing country, isn't it? :-)

I forgot what is called but it's not RON it's the average between RON and ROM. so 93 US is like 98 RON. Anyway. Any opinions? on the power loss?

It should be noted that only California in the US has the 91 octane limitation, unless you're really out in the middle of nowhere. Most places, countrywide, have 93 and often 94. Someone else related it to 98RON, which is about 93octane. For US gas, (R+M)/2 is the octane and R and M are somewhat standardized at a difference of 10. So add 5 to the US octane for it's RON.

Back on topic, the altitude thing is probably mostly responsible for this. The air up there just isn't as dense and so doesn't have as much oxygen in it to burn. I'd imagine that makes a significant difference. Try making a road trip to somewhere lower altitude and see if that makes the difference. Obviously the Porsche is probably being similarly affected.
