Cost to keep up with ZO6?
 

Got a bit bored at work today and started running stuff through my head. I'm sure just about everyone here has seen the infamous top gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson drove the EVO FQ400 around the track with a Lamborghini Murcielago and stayed right there with it until the Lambo eventually spun out. Seeing as how Murcielago sightings are far and few between in my neighborhood I got to wondering what it would take to make a USDM EVO capable of running head to head with Americas supercar, the Corvette ZO6.

I'm talking about an EVO that could be used as a daily driver, runs on 93 octane gas and still has an interior that could keep up with a bone stock ZO6 on a drag strip, autocross course, and a road course. Would this be even remotely possible with an intercooler, turboback, flash, and lowering springs or are we talkin' GT35R and $3k coilovers?

I don't even own an EVO anymore :(, but come spring I will be picking up a new EVO X RS and my basic goal with the car is for it to be able to keep up with or beat anything under $100k in pretty much all aspects (accelleration, handling, braking). I realize there will be differences between my old VIII and the X, but this should still give me a rough idea of how much money I will probably need to make this happen.{thumbup}

are you talking a c6 z06 or a c5?

id say your gonna be closer to the 35r set up with some meth and you should build the motor up a little bit...i dont think you would need $3k coilovers but if your spending that much on the motor you should def think about getting a nice pair of coilovers tein flex maybe?

c6 z06! hmm.... can't really say anything about the X though.

i was dead even with a c6 z06 last night.. setup in my sig stock 03 turbo

z06 was stock lol..

Sorry, didn't even think to specify that. Definitely the new C6 ZO6. I don't think the C5 Z06 would be nearly as big of a challenge. I have no intention of actually racing one, unless I come across one at the strip or an autocross event. Just curious as to what it would actually take to run head to head with one.

I thought the top gear episode was a pretty impressive comparison, but it didn't have much bearing on the real world since I've only seen 3 Murcielagos on the road since they were released. The ZO6, on the other hand I come across almost every day.

If you are talking about a c5z then at the drag strip you won't need much, just basic bolt ons to beat 99% of the STOCK c5z's out there.

The c6 however is a totally different animal and I'm guessing thats what you are trying to compare too. Bone stock average drivers run mid-high 11s and good drivers run low 11's in a c6z. There is a guy by the name of Ranger on corvetteforum who went 10.89 @ 127 on a BONE STOCK C6Z, the only mod being drag radials, he is the exception and not the rule because he has well over 500 passes between his old c5z & new c6z combined. With basic bolt-on's (intake, tune, exhaust) and good driving mid-high tens @ 130 are not a problem.

As far as a road course goes it would be totally driver dependent. IMO an EVO is much easier to control and make use of all the power if it was your first time out compared to a Z06.

Iv'e pondered this myself many times. Speed costs money. I would say you are talking at least 15K on top of the 35K Evo to be realistic about reliably going against a 500hp Vette on a road course. Buy the Vette for 70K and call it a day.

I took on a vette Z06 last week and they are quick but i got em from the dig no problem. We raced twice from the dig. Love my 57 trim. Oh and it was on pump gas too :D.

i beat a zo6 in the quarter with my stock turbo.....but the top end would have been another story....i ran a 12.1 at 114 now i have a new setup

You have some very nice mods on your EVO, but I don't think you have enough to keep up with a C6 Z06. What is your EVO capable of running in the 1/4? Low 12s? As mentioned before in this thread, a bone stock C6 Z06 will run low 11s.

Unless you have at least a GT35R, which I don't see in your sig, your stock turbo isn't capable of producing enough power no matter what other mods you do.

i doubt it will run low 11's on the stock tires correct me if im wrong...

Yes. I’m running a GT35R evo IX modded and I had beat couple c6 Z06, one was bone stock and I beat it pretty bad from 2 gear pull, and the other one had a couple goodies and the race was pretty even but I kept pulling 1-2 cars. My car is 500+ WHP no coilovers. But in my opinion it all depends on the driver.{thumbup} :mitsu:

after the quarter mile the zo6 is an animal you will ned a 35r for the top end but the quarter is diffrent...
