14 EVO8's?

This weekend while I was in Savannah, GA for the 4th I happened to drive by a Mitsubishi dealership that had an ENTIRE row of EVO8's. My girlfriend and I turned around and went back to the dealership. At this point I was determined that I was going to test drive one.

Immediately as I stepped out of the car a sales person was on me. "How ya doin'?" he asked. I introduced myself and my girlfriend and told him that we were down from Atlanta for the weekend. "What can I get you into today?" he asked. I activated "bull**** mode" and replied "Well my friend recently bought a WRX, and while we were at the dealership I test drove a STi. So, last night I came across the Evolution while researching the STi on Edmunds.com and I wanted to test drive the EVO to get a comparison." He then went on telling me things about the car and certain features it had. The one that stood out in mind the most was when he was talking about the intercooler spray.
"Yeah, it even has a switch for manual or auto for the intercooler spray!"
"what does it spray?"
"Ummm... I'm to not sure, I think it sprays air or something..."
"oh, okay... "

After he went through his little sales pitch I asked "So is it possible that I can get a test drive today?” "Sure! First lets go inside so I can get a little information from you!". We went inside and they had this yellow one all decked out. It had the front canards, grounding cables, front/rear strut bars, ect. The price was a little over $34,000. We then sat down and he asked me a few questions about where I worked, how much money I made, and what I was trading in. Afterwards, he asked if he could run my credit, but I said no and was just interested in test driving the car today. He ran over to the manager to get approval and came back about 5 minutes later with a key. “By the way, my manager said we’re only going to be able to drive it in the back parking lot.” “Alright”

We walked outside and told me that we were going to test drive a “stock” red one. So my girlfriend, the sales guy, and I hopped in. While he was explaining a few things about the interior, I just tuned him out adjusted the seat, turned the AC on, and turned off the radio. So I pulled it forward and drove it to the back parking lot. I drove it around the parking lot a few laps  and at one point I got on it hard and took it slightly over 5000 rpm. The sales guy shouted like he was dying which frightened my girl and said watch the RPM’s. I then stopped the car got out walked around it, looked under the hood, played with the throttle, and asked how long the tired lasted. His response: “I’m pretty sure they last as long as normal tires do.” “okay” I said back. Afterwards, we took the car back to the front, took his business card, and left.

To make a long story shot, heh, I got to test drive the EVO, see a total of 14 EVOs, and see every color in person and deal with an incompetent sales person. It all made my weekend!

PS: They had an EVO in service for a clutch job which doesn’t look like fun. The entire front lower end has been taken off.

Warning! BIG pictures!

Eight EVO8's

Red that I test drove and White that I have never seen here .

good to see the sales guy got on you for getting on the EVO...

even though the guy wasn't too familiar with the car, he was looking out for it...

Yup, the incompetent sales person who let you drive an Evo that you had no intention of buying.

I'm sure when you left he had enough things to say about you as well.

look, I'm not saying I didnt like the guy, in fact he was very nice. I'm just saying that he needs to know his information about the car before he says things that may not be correct. I do appreciate the fact that he let me drive it. Him and I both left on good terms. He knew that all I wanted to do was to test drive it and I told him that if he wanted to get back in touch with me that I would be their all weekend. He never did once call me back from Thursday to Sunday. Also, I may have not been intent on buying the car at that particular time, but I do plan on buying one before the years end. I wanted my girlfriend to get a feel for the car and see if she approved of it. Thanks...

THIS is why I ordered my car and it had less then 2 miles on it.

Damn right.

My car had 4 miles on it when I was the first person to test drive it.

Sure, I went a tad over 5000 RPMs but I bought the car a half-hour later.

Look, maybe I made this story seem worse than what it was. I BARELY even drove the car, maybe a 1/4 mile with one little burst of acceleration. I dont see why people have to get all upset when people talk about test driving the EVO. Read into it anyway you want.

Just goes to show the intelligence of Mitsubishi dealerships.

spyderturbo Jul 7, 2003 01:42 PM

A few bursts over 5k are not going to cause any permanent damage. If Mitsubishi sold cars this fragile, they would be out of business just by warranty repairs alone.

I bought my eclipse spyder gst back in 98 with 293 miles on the odometer. I got a good deal on it. Today...that car has over 150k on it and the 4g63 is still running as strong, starts up with ease and sounds great. Its had new valve stem seals put in...but thats it. I had that car modified for a long time as well.

But....I still wouldn't touch an EVO with under 25 miles personally. I bought mine with only 13 and I'm glad I was able to find her with low mileage! :)

Hell at least you got to test drive one. The bastards around here demand to run my credit to see what I can afford before they let me test drive the car and talk about pricing. Despite already having a loan already secured with my own bank. So I'm just going to wait them out and let some more time pass before I try again. Maybe by then they will pull their heads out of their asses and pretend like they want to sell a car.

I think it's funny how people badger others who test drive Evo's. So what? It's a $30k Mitsubishi, not a $200k exotic.

I will say this - I test drove a blue Evo before I bought my black one. I test drove that sucker HARD. redlined several times, I stomped the brakes, took turns harder than I should have. It's a performance car, and I for one would not buy one with only a few magazine and online reviews of the car. My salesman, who is an experienced SCCA racer, also drove it hard to show me what it's capable of.

On the other hand, scratch that. I'm a hypocrite. When it came time to buy from that dealership, they said "are you ready to buy that beautiful blue Evo?". My reply - "Are you crazy? We flogged the hell out of that thing during it's brake in period. Let's order me a black one" {devil}

I showed up as it was coming off the truck; no one other than me has ever driven this car

I did the same thing but they had a "Demo car" with a few dings so I drove that one hard and ordered one just like it. In fact that one was not for sale.
