Evo won't start, no click from starter
 

2003 Evo with about 100,000 miles
When trying to start the starter makes no clicking noise. The battery is charged and all connections look to be clean and tight. Also I'm able to roll start the car and it runs fine when started. Would appreciate the help Thanks!

No Check engine light? take starter out and test it, also check your ignition.

check the starter, had a problem like that and the starter fried,

starter relay?

just check the plug that plugs into the starter, when I changed my clutch mine wiggled off after the first ride and didn't work the next day.

Check your battery terminals. Ive had mine "pop" due to them being dirty and the connection is broken. Use a small wire brush to clean them and the inside of the terminal ring and this may help. Could be a starter connection as well. If other electronic stuff in the car (lights and stuff) still works then its a starter issue most likely. Check fuses as well.

use a test light to see if you have power from one side of the solenoid to the other. If you do try tapping the starter with a rubber malet if it turns over you got a dead spot in the windings and the starter will need to be replaced.

I'm think i'm having the same issue - I hear a whining sound but no "spark/starter".


My friend who was near the front of the car said he heard a clicking but I wasn't able to hear it.

I just had the same exact problem, but mine got progressively worse. It ended up being my starter.

My car would start in the morning strong, drive to work, park it, in the afternoon at 5pm when I went to leave, the car started up strong, drove home. 10 minutes after being home, I would go to start the car, and nothing. Sometimes 5 minutes after that, it would start. This went on for a week or two, then one Friday night, it was done for good.

I got myself a new starter, dropped the old one out, put the new one in, and voila! Started right up. This happened to me at ~56k. I guess some starters last longer then others.

having the same issue checked the battery its at 100% replace one of the terminals which was in bad shape and still nothing. recently replaced the alternator so i know its not that. so how much does a starter run?

Picked up my starter from a friend for $80, but he would have sold it for $100. It was from an '06 with 15k miles on it. Do a search to see if someone is selling one on the forums. If not, try ebay or Napa, autozone, etc.

at the top pof the clutch pedal there is a plug. unplug it and see if the problem contiunes

I have the same problem i have to keep turning the key for a couple of times sometimes it goes right away and on other occasions it takes up to 10 minutes, I dont know if its the started or someone told me it could be my flywheel

If you hear the fuel pump, then crawl under the front of the car and check the wire going to the starter - make sure its plugged in nice and snug.

I had the SAME EXACT problem that plagued me on-and-off for a year. I replaced the starter, and it came back. The plug just tends to wiggle off, so make sure its on there good and it should fire right up.

The starter is basically 2-14mm bolts and 1-12mm bolt. The 2-14mm bolts actually hold it onto the motor, and the 12mm is for the power wire. There's a little black plug that just slides over a metal tab, and I believe that's a ground. I don't see how that can get loose without someone previously messing with it. Same with the power wire. Unless the nut some how got loose, I can't see how it would be the issue.

After I swapped in my new(er) starter, I've had no issues at all.
