Co-efficient drag of Evo without the wing?
Does anyone have this info? I'm trying to figure out if it will make a huge difference in a straight line at higher speeds with allot of power. Thanks for the help

I can't give you math, but removing the wing does reduce drag at high speeds.
I can cite one specific case where an Evo owner was running the standing mile and decided to remove his wing to get more speed up top. He gained 2 mph I think ... above the 170 mph mark ... then he spun the car when he let off the throttle due to the lack of downforce. So yes ... it can give you more speed, but at the cost of stability. Please think hard before you decide to take it off. |
I took mine off for a while to get it re-cleared. The car is faster up top and then very floaty. It needs that wing for sure unless it is a pure drag racer.

damn! what speed do you say would be safe till then? reason is a closed airport for racing. allot of domestic cars which insist on going at least 180mph. so i just wanna play it safe! thanks for your help guys!

I'd suggest leaving the wing on for those speeds. I personally wouldn't go over 125 or so without mine.

With the wing, at high speeds, it does reduce drag and keep the car planted.

I have tested this with my old BBY evo which made 378AWHP on a dynojet. At that state of tune my GPS showed a top speed of 173mph with the spoiler on. I took my spoiler off it was getting recoated the birds decided to peck at it . The car with the spoiler off was very unstable at 169mph which was all it would do. I did this test the same day in the same conditions. The spoiler is on there for a reason and thats to keep the ass end planted when running at speed whether its in a straight line or going fast around a corner.

This is a great thread, but I am really happy with my APR GTC-200 with 2.5" risers on my 03' evo 8. The wing is suppose to produce more downforce than the OEM wing and looks great!
I suppose my car is even slower now with the extra downforce, but it should be even more stable at higher speeds since I upgraded to a 35R. |

So if at higher speeds without the wing it actually reduced top speed by a couple mph? Thats insane. So my next question is, are all the drag racing guys actually loosing mph off thier trap speeds?

keep in mind almost every drag car still has some sort of wing. Usually extended off the end of the trunk for about 6-12"
