Twisted off the power cable bolt on the starter.. can I fix it? pics inside.

So as the title states I'm putting my car back together after A Shep trans install and I twisted off this damn bolt. Question is can I fix this cheap or do I need to buy a whole new starter. Seems overkill http://www.imgur.com/djo60.jpeg http://www.imgur.com/djo60.jpeg

Am I the only one who has done this?

Bump. Am I screwed?

TommiM Oct 21, 2012 06:36 AM

Are you sure the pics are big enough? :D

Im not sure but you may be able to solder it back on. You just want to make sure you have a good connection otherwise ya, you may need a new starter.

Galaxy s3 haha. Making sure you can see everything... Solder is a good idea. Is conductive epoxy a good idea or definitely not strong enough? Any one use that stuff.

conductive epoxy might work. I would try that, cause either way if it doesnt work you will end up buying a new starter anyhow. Might as well try the cheaper route first. the epoxy might be easier to apply as well.

I would get a new starter. You're going to take it out to set the epoxy anyway. Why not have peace of mind and get a starter that you know won't eventually leave you stranded?

How.. did you manage to do this?

+1. Get a new one and call it a day. safe and problem free.

Find a place that does alternator rebuilds. Just have them replace the solenoid. That's a live battery connection.
You don't want to risk it falling off and shorting against the downpipe. You'll have a much bigger problem then.

I have a starter for sale if your interested

Ryanwc Oct 22, 2012 06:22 AM

I just ordered a new one. Thanks though :) I was just tightening it like normal. It just didn't feel like it was getting snug, of course until it twisted off haha. But that was after all day wrangling the transfer case and tranny so I may have underestimated my strength.
