What's the NACA Duct on the hood for?
 

I'm just wondering what the NACA duct on the hood of a Evo VII is for. I've seen pictures of the engine compartment and it doesn't look like it leads to anything except for the battery? The engine air intake is obviously located near the front grill.

I just figuared that it was for air intake but your right, I can see that it looks like the air box leads down and towerd the grill.

NACA "supposedly" stands for Naturally Aspirated Cold Air duct...

Don't know why considering the machine is turbocharged from the factory. Maybe Mitsu in all their wisdom decided that any aftermarket intakes would be placed right underneath and behind the duct to make perfect use of it...:dunno:

Do you mean the triangular intake on top of the hood? I think that's there for FIA Rally homologation. They put them on the road going cars so they can use them in rallying.

The air intake on the Evo5/6 is on the side of the engine bay.
The air duct on the rally cars feed to a carbon box from which the air intake sucks in the air.

The road cars dont really make much use of the air duct though but you can do the same as the rally cars and put in a carbon box there as well.

actually naca stands for nationally advisory commitee for aeronautics and it is very close to nasa...it is to make the air on the outer side of the car go towards the turbine...basically is just to get more air for the turbo...and it is that little tirangular thing on the v-spec ii so i'd assume is almost the same for the evo it is a small duct on the outer side of the hood

Baiscally the duct is a design that brings in maximum air from a flat surface without generating a bunch of turbulence. The same duct is used on the read drivers side window of Winston Cup cars to bring in air to cool the drivers helmets and suits.
I too havent really understood its purpose on the E7 but I am sure I can make it do something useful.

Now it is blocked off with a plate. It is for use in the rally car. I have been thinking the same thing. It could be put to good use.
